Travels on he Silk Road:

The ancient Silk Road between Tus/Mashad and Bukhara passes by this caravanserai, a kind of motel for whole caravans, be it administrators or traders, horses or dromedars. It is Ruhat-e Sharaf near Sarakhs, Iran. It was built in the year 1114 with bricks by order of Sultan Sanjar, the Seljuk master of a huge empire, whose center was nearby Merv (good-bye Bagdad at that time). In the background you see the improved Silk Road, and the Kopet Tag mountain-chain that separates Iran from Turkmenistan. The building survived the Mongol times, but with water supply dwindling it was later abandoned. Today careful renovations are under way.

The slide was scanned, the skies deblurred, some smudges removed, the colour adjusted.
