Ashura procession
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Another ceramic panel from the Takieh of Mo'aven ol-Molk. This one is the most famous, showing a procession for Ashura, the mourning of Hussein, the third shiite Imam.
Ashura processions include penitents self-inflicting wounds; the most motivated use knives to cut the skin on top of the head (it bleeds a lot), they are the ones shown here, but today, at least in Iran, it seems that most penitents use an iron whip. On the right of the picture you can see torso naked men hitting their chest.
The mourning of Hussein is a really big thing for Iranians; most manifestations are not as violent as this: people usually prefer to pay hommage by lighting candles, as you can see in the photos by Charmante and Stranger.
A takieh, like the one where this picture was shot, is a religious building used to perform a play of the martyrdom of Hussein. Most of the ceramic panels in the takieh of Kermanshah are related to Ashura, showing scenes from the life and death of Hussein.
Unfortunately a takieh panel showing a procession as graphic as this one can cause envy to some people, that's why it is the most damaged of all: it's been used as a source for "souvenirs"...
I'll put in the workshop the full picture of the panel. |
