History and architecture
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the 12 Apostles, St. Thaddeus, also known as Saint Jude, (not to be confused with Judas Iscariot), was martyred while spreading the Gospel. He is revered as an apostle of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Legend has it that a church dedicated to him was first built on the present site in AD 68.
Not much appears to remain of the original church, which was extensively rebuilt in 1329 after an earthquake damaged the structure in 1319. Nevertheless, some of the parts surrounding the altar apse date from the 10th century.
Most of the present structure dates from the early 19th century when Qajar prince Abbas Mirza helped in renovations and repairs. The 19th century additions are from carved sandstone. The earliest parts are of black and white stone, hence its Turkic name Kara Kilise, the Black Church.
A fortified wall surrounds the church and its now-abandoned monastery buildings.
In July 2008, the St. Thaddeus monastery was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List, along with two other Armenian monuments located in the same province: Saint Stepanos Monastery and the chapel of Dzordzor.

This ancient Armenian monastery is very well preserved.
The facades are beautifully decorated with arches and bas-reliefs and in the doorway we find a large bas-relief of an animal.
Beautifully with the even blue sky as background.
Best regards, Paul

Hello dear Saber
Another excellent view of the St Thaddeus church. I like the warm light and the play of light and shade. The details in the architecture are lovely and sharp and the slight distortion caused by the wide-angle lens is very artistic. Excellent shot.

Ottima nitidezza e ripresa molto accurata.
Ciao e buona serata

the monastery is very interesting from this angle too. The way you filled the frame with this view has given the perspectives great impact. The details and the textures are clear and attractive despite the lighting variations. I like very much the different density of the shadows and the warm tones of the lit parts. The blue sky makes a wonderful contrasting backdrop. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

The tight frame is putting the monastery in evidence. THe point of view is showing a double perspective of the architecture of the monastery. The good luminosity is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Lisa (delpeoples) likes the slight distortion given by the wide angle lens. It doesn't worry me unduly, but it's certainly possible to "correct" the converging verticals if you wish (and you probably know this already). I've offered a WS to show you what I mean and hope you don't mind my intrusion!

beautiful architecture and a very interesting historical place, I am really glad that you shared it here. You had a great weather with nice blue sky. Light strong and creates strong shades and the effect is very impressive,
