Somewhere in the centre of Yazd, on a rather coolish morning. While waiting for their father, the children were playing in the yard. Only seconds later the father appeared and together, taking the Mercedes in the background, they drove away.
I liked that picture for it shows the parallel existance of three completely different eras within one frame:
In the background some houses of Yazd, built with nothing but water, clay, straw and earth. Keeping out the heat in summer and the cold in winter, these houses are perfectely adapted to the harsh climate of the desert climate in central Iran. Thus houses like these have been built in Persia for at least 3 to 4 millenia.
Between the children and these houses two cars are standing, both far from new: a 1954 Mercedes W170 Ponton and a younger VW-Beetle. Both are in pretty good shape and old cars are far from unusual on the streets of Iran since new cars are very hard to come by.
In the foreground the children are playing, the second generation born under the Islamic Republic of Iran, thus raised by parents who themselves have never witnessed anything but the present regime.
Living prehistory, history, present and future within only one picture. |
