The combat of Rostam and Sohrab, in which Sohrab, the only sun of Rostam was killed by his father. This magnificent painting is done my Master Behzad and now is in the White palace , Sa'd Abad Royal Complex Tehran.

Rostam is a mythical hero of Iran and son of Zal and Rudaba. In some ways, the position of Rostam in the historical tradition is curiously parallel to that of Surena, the hero of the Carrhae. His figure was endowed with many features of the historical personality of Rostam. The latter was always represented as the mightiest of Iranian paladins, and the atmosphere of the episodes in which he features is strongly reminiscent of the Arsacid period. He was immortalized by the 10th century poet Ferdowsi of Tus in the Shahnameh or Epic of Kings, which contain pre-Islamic folklore and history.

Sohrab was the son of Rostam and Tahmineh (daughter of the king of Samangan). He was born and grew up in Samangan ,whilst his father was in a different part of Iran.

He became a great local hero and decided to go to his father's town and make his father the king [of Iran]. Afrasiab, the Turanian king, took the opportunity and supplied him with a great army. Finally Sohrab was killed by his father Rostam, while both were ignorant of the identity of one another.

In Shahname it is told that when Sohrab was just 1 month old he looked like a 12-year-old child.
By far, the most famous and popular story of Rostam in the Shahnameh is Rostam and Sohrab, in which he kills his own son Sohrab, while the two are unaware of the identity of their opponent until after Rostam wounds his son and during their final conversation the two realize they were father and son.

Salam Akbar,
Nice capture related to that tragedy + an excellent note..thanks for sharing.

Best wishes, Atousa

Hi Akbar
It is a very intresting photo from a very interesting painting of one of many shahname’s epics… however I must say it is not from the battle of Rostam and sohrab… as far as my knowledge goes… rostam didn’t kill sohrab with an arrow! It was with a dagger… and too, Rostam didn’t wear any of his helmet or anything because he wasn’t sure if he can Defeat Sohrab and he didn’t want the enemy to know, incase if he lost, that Rostam Dastan is lost in the battle… so it would be good to see which battle this painting has been taken from…
