Photographer’s Note
Sewing Pateh is one of the various beautiful Iranian over-sewing, which covers part or sometimes all the surface of the base material, with colored yarns, mostly wool and silk but sometimes silver and gold. This artful handicraft is a specialty of Kerman Province. The historians believe the art of sewing Pateh flourished during Safavid Dynasty. One of the oldest Patehs with a date hologram, dates back to 1859 and measures 355 x 210 cm. It represents the full time work of 16 women over a two-year period.
The cloth that is used as the base material for Pateh is called Ariz. Ariz comes in different colors, mainly white, red, yellow, green, navy blue, black, and orange with red and white being the most common.
Both original and new designs are used for sewing Pateh. The original and authentic Iranian design used is "Boteh Jegheh" or the tree of life. This is the most common design and historically used in most of the art-works, both woven and sewn. Boteh Jegheh has originally represented the Iranian Cypress tree, which has been known as the tree of life. In the shot the Patehs in orange color in the right were sewn in traditional way and you can find Boteh Jegheh design in them which somehow looks like a pear. It is also seen in the margin of the white Pateh. The blue and the dark Patehs were sewn using newer designs.
Pateh can be used for cushion cover; prayers mat; round, oval, and square table cloth; back rest cover; curtain; pillow cover; square and rectangular all purpose keepsake.
The shot was taken in a Pateh shop in the grand bazaar of Kerman . Many of them were hanged on the wall of the store.

Bonsoir, cher Atousa,
Quels patchworks aux couleurs splendides ! la beauté du travail réalisé est remarquable.
Je comprends qu'il faille beaucoup de temps pour réaliser une réalisation de grande taille.
Une image de toute beauté accompagnée d'une note très intéressante.

Hello Atousa, Your informative note compliments this picture really well, excellent colour & detail with the tree of life clearly visible. It would be a pity if this type of art & traditional work was not maintained because of increasing labour costs. One the things I like about TE is the opportunity we have of learning about other countries, to day thanks to you I have learnt something new.
My warm regards

Greetings Atousa!
Sorry it's been awhile. I spent a week in Philadelphia and and just now getting caught up.
This photo caught my eye because of the vivid colors and patterns. With so much beauty in front of you, it must have been tough to choose a composition that would really highlight these incredible works and not appear overly cluttered. You've done an excellent job with the black piece on the left and the blue piece as the focal point, all surrounded by red and orange hues. Thanks so much for the informative note as well - what a story!
Warm Regards,
Rachel

Bonjour Atousa,
Your composition around these various Pateh is charming. You perfectly juxtaposed colors and motives. I dream in front of these extraordinary Boteh Jegheh. It is strange what you say about the cypress. In Europe, it is often associated with the death because it is the tree which we find in cemeteries. But for me, it is a tree of life because it has an extraordinary strength always by raising itself towards the sky. Then I am satisfied whether there are one tree of life in Iran.
Very intersting note.
Best regards

I learnt a very interesting thing after reading your note about the Pateh sewing! Stunning work done with threads, the details are to be seen to be believed. I also like the colour scheme here, with the small blue patchwork standing out. A fine TE post in which we've really learnt something about your country's artwork & culture.
