Photographer's Note

It's 20th picture in the serie .

The bright, flowered scarves and heavily pleated, embroidered black skirts are traditional dress for the women from Abyaneh.

They speak a language, rooted in ancient Aramaic, that is specific to their village, and practice Islam with fire ceremonies that hark back to the fire worshiping Aryans that settled the Iranian plateu before the advent of Zorastrism.

The people of the village still wear their traditional costumes and the literate ones still speak the ancient Parthian Pahlavi language.

The Zoroastrian population of the village mingles happily with the Muslim inhabitants, keeping to their customs and observing their traditions.
