The Zenobia was a Swedish RO-RO ferry which sank close to Larnaca Cyprus in July 1980. On her maiden voyage, a computer problem caused her to develop a list. Unable to enter the Larnaca harbor, she was forced to anchor some 3 miles to the south east. The list continued, and eventually the vessel capsized and sank. She now rests on her port side in 42 meters of water, approximately 1 mile directly offshore from Larnaca airport and is a popular dive site.
I spent the summer of 2004 living in Cyprus in an art school that was set up like a youth hostel.... except not as nice. I was there to paint & to scuba dive. In-between painting, I was able to spend many days diving. The water in this part of the Mediterranean is extremely clear. Unfortunately they have severely over-fished, so there is not a huge amount of underwater life, although there are still octopus to be found. My main interest in diving in Cyprus was to visit the Zenobia Wreck. This amazing wreck became the focus of my diving and of my paintings.
Unfortunately, on my first dive on this wreck - my camera flooded. This caused me to loose many photos! Even with the bad luck, this was an amazing dive site. |

Hello Margo,
a nice marine documentary. I never took pictures below ground level, it must be an experience.
What attracted me first was the title, Zenobia, knowing this was the name of the Queen of Syria during the Roman Empire at one point. Trade flourished within the region and i thought there could have been a connection, although highly doubtful.
Nice archaic capture. Cheers
