Please, have a seat at Serifos' Hora Photo

Photographer’s Note

In the vast majority of the islands of the Aegean their "capitals" are called "Hora". Most of the Horas are located in the interior of the island, high up on some hill, relatively far from the sea. The main reasons, were defensive reasons, as the people of the islands wanted to avoid attacks from the pirates that once upon a time were lurking the Archipelago.

Of course there are some exceptions. For example, the "Hora" of Mykonos is a seaside town, because the Mykonians used to do business with the pirates, or in some cases were pirates themselves.

Last week, I had the chance to visit two islands, that have two of the most beautiful Horas of the Aegean, Serifos and Folegandros.

The Hora of Serifos is divided in 2 parts, in 2 neighbourhoods, the Ano (Upper) Hora and the Kato (lower) Hora. In this photo you can see the square (Piazza) of Ano Hora, where you can see on the background the only building that's not white and blue, and it's the Town Hall.

Un sitio precioso,y una toma muy buena,tiene una luz y una nitidez perfectas,y los colores exactamente igual,excelente.Me gusta la distribucion en la foto;las casas abriendo la plaza,las sillas..,el trozo de pared de la izquierda algo menos,pero creo que es lo que demarca la plaza,asique me parece bien que lo incluyeras.La nota muy instructiva,desconocía esa información.Y tengo algunas preguntas:
1-que tiempo de exposicion usaste?
2-donde esta la gente?estaba ya cerrado?porque aqui si dejas las sillas asi no las vuelves a ver...

Hello Hercules,
This is a fantastic view of the Hora, capturing the all the elements perfectly. It is like a film or stage set - we await the first entrance of the various characters - the priest from the church gate, the mayor from the Town Hall, the taverna owner....
These squares must have had a very different atmosphere before electricity became available for public areas, but they have an intrinsic, simple beauty that looks good under all conditions.

you know i like mykonos a lot mainly because of its picturesque hora... but andreas is right i guess as he keeps telling me that the less touristy islands of kyklades are so much better... (but mykonos has a direct flight from istanbul so it wins...)

this is just fab giritli mou... looks like i could walk through the monitor and have a seat there... looks soooo inviting...

You found a very interesting corner there with the typical Greek houses and their lovely colours making a great combination with those of the esplanade.
