In the inter-war period, Szczecinek was called the Pearl of the Western Pomerania Region. Picturesquely located among woodlands and between Lakes Trzesiecko and Wielimie, it is a town with a population of 40,000, covering an area of 3.7 km2 1/5 of which is inhabited. The remaining area includes investment sites, woods and lakes, the largest of which is Lake Trzesiecko (with an area of 0.3 km2), which is situated within the town borders.
The downtown area, which includes a town hall with a characteristic profile and a historic architecture system, is a traffic-free zone, the unique character of which is emphasized by an elegant promenade running along the lake and situated within walking distance from it. On the lake's banks, a dozen former German villas and the impressive seat of a high school are located. St Mary's church, built in neo-gothic style dating back to early 20th c, is Szczecinek's major landmark. It borders tight development on one side, and on the other side you can see the park and Niezdobna River, which links Lakes Trzesiecko and Wielimie. Not far from the church, on the opposite riverbank, another historic sight is situated. The Pomeranian Duke's Castle there dates back to Medieval times, but as a result of modernizations introduced in 16th, 19th and 20th c, its original character has not been preserved. Also on the river, an old Prussian-wall granary is situated. However, the structure that is the most worth visiting in Szczecinek is not a historic sight, but a modern swimming pool with aqua-park, sauna, solarium and drink bar.
Szczecinek attracts tourists mainly with the beauty of the neighboring natural areas. The city is a starting point for sightseeing in the Central Pomerania region, especially for those coming up from the south. Existing tourist trails offer sightseeing tours to the north up to Kołobrzeg, along the Parsęta River, the source of which is situated only a few kilometers away from the city, and in the western direction to the lakes and picturesque places in the Drawskie Lakeland region.
