Photographer’s Note
I was lucky enough to be given a glider flying lesson for my retirement, and the launch was amazing - up and over Loch Leven and Castle Island. Sorry if the photo is a bit hazy as it was taken through the glider perspex canopy.
Why might Mary Queen of Scots have disliked this?
She was imprisoned there in 1567 after being defeated at Carberry Castle (in East Lothian). She gave birth on the island for the second time, but it's not sure what happened to the infant(s). She fell very ill and was forced to sign abdication papers. After much too-ing and fro-ing she managed to escape.
There's a fascinating account of her time on the island here: http://www.marie-stuart.co.uk/Castles/Lochleven2.htm
