Photographer’s Note

Hi Everyone,

I know it's been a while since I posted but hopefully I will have more time now and can start posting again.

To start with I've returned to one of my favourite places, Redcar beach. It really is a beautiful place and a photographers dream with lots of items to use as foreground detail. I was let down a bit by the sky not being as vibrant as I'd hoped for but the waves helped to make up for that.

Taking this photo required me to wear my waterproof wellies and I had to push the tripod well down in the sand to stop it moving with the waves.

On the technical side, I used a ND grad filter to balance the exposure and tweaked the aperture to get a half second exposure, any longer and you lose the feeling of movement in the waves.

fantastic use of the ultra wide lens in this image.
good DOF and POV also.
the slow time exposure did a wonderful job in the photo.
nice colors and light..

Hi Paul;

I was thinking the exact same thing when i saw your ID, it's been a while since we've seen you here on TE.
Nice composition, and a good exposure as you've captured the movement nicely. My only suggestion is to take a bit more care as your horizon is crooked.

If anyone knows the optimum speed for capturing the right amount of movement in the waves you do. :) I love the "action" around the fg rock. The sky colours are subtle and reflected well in the wet sand. Well done

Hi Paul,

Good to see you back posting mate! I like this one better than the latest one you posted. I think it is mostly the movement in this one that I find most attractive. I really like that dark set of clouds nearest to you in the sky.

I looked over the horizon really closely and find that it isn't actually crooked but it is suffering slightly from barrel distortion. That left side is the same distance from the top as the right side but the fact that the middle rises and slants down to the right gives the impression of a wonky horizon.
