[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This abbey is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country. There has been an abbey in Melrose since the 7th century. But what you see on this picture is largely of 15th century construction. The earlier structure having suffered greatly for Sctoland independence in the 14th century.

The heart of Robert the Bruce is buried from beneath the abbey, on the left side of the picture.

Tech: I was not satisfied with the sky that I captured but the grass is so beautiful that I decided to desaturate the entire image excepted the grass.

This is a very powerful picture - especially after reading your note. I really like the effect you created by desaturating all but the grass - it gives the abbey a feeling of gloom and ages gone by. Another reason I like this is because I am a "Bruce" myself, (and also the daughter of a Robert Bruce) I've always been interested in this era of Scottish history. Well done on this picture!

Great composition and description, but I think the sky contributes well to the "name of the rose"-like atmosphere.

Your desaturation works very well here, Francis. The perfect grassy lawn contrast well with the abbey's ruins.
The architecture is still impressive. Good note. Well framed.

Your choice of treatment for this photograph works well, the grey of a typical grey day and monument offset against the lush green grass. It just emphasises the greens and greys that seem so typical of Scotland.

Amazing scenery Francis. Very nice to see grey old scary castle and clouds(frog) and very green neat grass. Well seen and composed.
Bravo. Regards, Don.

Bravo

Impressive building you capture here very well, Francis.

The idea with desaturating the top part works well with the old stone castle.

Well Done.

The desaturation works beautifully. I love the contrast of the dead grey and bright green. It also lets the details of the ruins stand out very nicely while maintaining this beautiful color. And finally it adds a moodiness to the sky. It gives it all a haunted feel. My only suggestion would to to have kept the distant hills also in color but that would also involve working on all the empty windows. It's a beautiful ruin. I especially like the central tower. It seems to have been ripped apart like paper and looks like it really shouldn't be standing. Very nice work all around, Francis.

A great work you did here,well PPed:)Francis!
I like it,great composition,and fine note,very interesting shot.

Bravo Francis.
Excellent composition Francis, you knew how to value this very beautiful architecture by decomposing the colours of the church and the lawn of the foreground.
A single word: SUPERB.
Bravo Francis.

Very beautful, Francis! I like very much your choice to leave just the gry and green!

Well I don't know the original but to be true the nice composition, the great objects in the photo and your POV deserved a little more effort in order to keep the colors in the building, mountains and sky...

I believe that applying the Clarify tool of PSP8 several times in the sky could produce a stunning sky because it has a lot of interesting textures and shapes.

Made a WS.

Bravo!

A nice experiment that succeeded very well, I must say. It's somewhat strange but the grey sky does make the ruins look more tragical. Good work.

Great shot and a fine PP - you got a mystic atmoshpere at this fine image - very fine job Francis - thanks for letting us see this.

Bravo!

Effectful post work, good choice. Well made this pix of the ruined abbey. Good job Francis

Wow, great scene. Amazing colours..:o) I love it. Great one. :o)

The partial de-saturation works fantastic, Francis. The green grass is so well highlighted by thhis PP, and is beatifful. The architecture details are well presented, oo. Very good shot.

I like the work done, the top part all in B&W with uniform tone renders well.

Hi Francis,

The desaturation effect works well here. Well composed, well lit, good result.

Well done,

Regards,

Vic, Singapore.

Wow! This is a powerful shot. I had a look at the WS and I must say I like both the original, coloured version and I like this one.
Very effective with desaturated building and sky. Excellent contrasts and details.
Great sky.
Very well done.

Great shot Francis;

Very good choice in desaturating the way you did.
I like it. Good job!

living the grass green was a great idea. the picture is very interessting, and you captured it from a good angle. very original.good job!

This would be my first time, seeing a grey and ancient structure, standing on a green turf. A rather grand memorial for Robert The Bruce. Good effect Francis, in expressing the abbey. Almost eloquent by itself.

Very nice and artistic work.
Very good and useful note.

Merci Francis.Phil

wow! this is quite a picture. love the distinct colors and contrasts made by nature and captured perfectly by you. nice ancient architectural element too.

Great subject, partial desaturation works very well.

Hi Francis,
I like this photo very much, the colour of the grass nicely contrasting with the building and the sky make it an interesting effect. The buiding looks as if artificially changed, as if some parts of it at the top have been erased, I like it (is it like that in real?) really nicely done.. greetings
ukasz

Hi Francis,

I'm a big fan of partial de-saturation so I was drawn to your image. Good contrast between the vivid grass and the gloomy looking abbey, it just fits very well together. I like your pov and your note. It's a fine shot, well done.

Regards

Stephen
