Back in November 2007 there was a spell of calm, foggy, frosty weather. This inspired me to get some foggy early morning shots, and living on an island that is very hilly, this wasn't hard to do at all!
Ashey (where the photo is) is a very flat area that commonly gets thick fog during still, calm, mornings and to get a photo of the valley i needed to be up on Ashey down.
On this occasion i was looking north/northeast toward the town of Ryde of which you an just make out the church steeple, and then beyond to the Solent and finally Portsmouth.

Interestingly, up on the hill where i took this from wasn't cold at all, infact was pleasantly warm in the sunshine, although down in the valley the temperature was recorded at -5c!
Some other shots from this morning can be found a couple of pages back (ice web and smallbrook sunrise)

NOTE: I have just noticed the horizon isn't quite straight, it tilts ever so slightly to the left Grrr!!!!!!!!

Hi Jamie,
Wow, how could you keep this jewel hidden for so long, I like a lot how the fog envelopes the various landscape elements and turns them into mystical stuff, with the outlined succession there is also a great sensation of depth, funnily the tower in the far distance looks more american than english !
Have a nice day JY

Wonderful composition, light and shapes ! Great !

Hello Jamie,
The fog and the trees are superb.
Wonderful composition..

Hi Jamie
Execellent POV with the multiple layers. It borders on surrealism, especially if one imagines that there are no buiddings in the yonder. Congrats.

This is beautiful! In fact all of your shots are fantastic! I haven't been to the Isle of Wight yet, but I'm definitely inspired to go now! I like the pov. Really excellent feel to the shot. Well done. Rgds, Leilani

Hi JAmie,
A very interesting view with very nice atmosphere and colors between fogs and orange sunset. I like also your photo construction with lot of plan and against the light.
Very good work.
Regards.
Olivier

HI Jamie,

excellent work, love the DOF and the way you have captured the light with an excellent POV. TFS

The horizon looks ok to me! The colour of the sky and trees contrasts nicely with the blue of the mist.

Alan

Hello Jamie
Lucky you. I wish I could see it. Beautiful how the trees pop out from the mist. The tall building far away seems to be copying the shape of the church spire.
Well done.

Fantastic weather situation here Jamie. You chose a great pov to nail this one. Great work..

Hi, Jamie! It is splendid shot! Fantastic view of early morning mist with nive colours. Thees and buildings growing from the mist are very beautiful. Thank you for sharing!

Katya.

Hi Jamie,

I had this one in my internet explorer favourite list for a while, since I wanted to comment on it but over time I just forgot. Well, fortunately I do look at my favourites list - no use having one if you never look at it ;-).

To start with; To me the horizon is straight. I wouldn't consider the furthest away point to be the horizon, but the tree-line just in front of that. And that one is really straight. So no reasons to 'grrr' for me :-).
What I like most here is the depth. And that's not just created by the mist, but also by your point of view. The lines of trees moving slightly diagonal through the compo, from left to right and then back a bit further away. Very nice!!

Greetings, Dennis

Hi,
Just discovered your gallery this morning, and I'm in awe before such artistic photos. I think this one is outstanding (although I havn't seen them all :-)). But this one sooo beautiful with that low fog lying like a veil on the landscape. And than that crisp winter-morning sky that lets your eye travel all the way, over the Solent, to Portsmouth in the far distance. A masterpiece that I will add to my favorites.
With great respect,
John
