Uhhh, a whale shark i saw one once while snorkeling and even though I knew it isn't dangerous I almost walked on water trying to get away from this giant, the theme from "Jaws" ringing in my ears, once I calmed myself down it was a great experince. It 's really nice to see actual underwater shots and not the ones through glass, I love it!

Very impressive shot! If this is for real it looks like it is an old shark which lost all its teeth!

Impressionnant cette gueule ouverte ! Si je m'étais trouvé dans cette situation, nez-à-nez avec le requin, j'aurais pris mes palmes à mon cou et j'aurais raté la photo. Félicitations!

Marvellous shot. The dark sea and the filtered sunlight on the shark makes this picture look like a scene out of Jaws movie. Although, of course, this isn't a dangerous species. Could you give us any hint of the size of this animal?

Great great picture of this beautifull animal.
Contrary to what people wrote in here, this is NOT a whale shark!
The whale shark is the largest fish in any ocean, this, a Baskin Shark, is the second. It's a close relative to the Great White Shark, though it feeds solely on plancton, swimming at 2, 3 knots and filtering several dozen cubic meter of water per hour.
It can measure up to 12 meters, but it's most commonly 4 to 7 meters long, on the english coast.
It DOES have teeth ! 6 rows on the upper jaw, and 9 on the lower..but they are 5 mm long.
Your shot is magnificent. I think if I saw a monster like this under water it would be eating more then plancton pretty soon, as I'd probably leave a trail on my way out ....

Hi Gary,
Wow....an amazing shot of this basking shark. I can't help but noticing that this "old guy" has no teeth.....is that normal for Basking sharks? At first glance I thought this was a Great White....something we get pretty used to in False Bay - Cape Town....but the no teeth answered it for me! Very impressive image under what I would think is pretty difficult conditions....heart thumping, and all that. Well done.
Cheers Grant
