As Christmas approaches I thought my last post of the year should be more sedate than my previous one. This is part of the River Creed which runs through the grounds of Lews Castle. I took it after a spell of heavy rain and I couldn't do much about the branches top right but I think they give the image a sense of scale. The water is a shade of brown due to the river running through a vast amount of peat further upstream. I've posted a WS showing the same area with a one second exposure.

I'd like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas & Health & Happiness in 2008.

'Beauty and love are all my dream;
They change not with the changing day;
Love flows forever like a stream
That flows but never flows away....'

Extract from a poem by Andrew Young. 1885-1972

The River Creed System

The Creed system drains about 42 square kilometers of peat moorland, entering the Minch just south of Stornoway. It is a renowned salmon and sea trout fishery, which has been managed by the Stornoway Angling Association since 2001. Catches have improved since then, reflecting the active management of the fishery by the association.

The season runs from 1st June to the 15th Oct, with July, August and September normally the most productive months. The quality of the fishing on the river is very much dependant on sufficient rainfall to raise the river level.

Good morning Stephen!
This picture has a lot of dynamics and wonderful natural colours. One nearly can hear the water plashing. I like it - and the excellent note - very much!
Greetings from humid and cool Germany - and have a wonderful and an a bit contemplative Advent season!
Frank

Hello Stephen,
Perfect exposure for this fine composition of rushing waters. I like the point of view with the angular turn of the stream well positioned in the frame. Very good natural colours under a lovely light. Good work. Best wishes to your and your family for Christmas and the New Year.

Bonjour Stephen
Cordialement

Hi,
My favourite peaty colours in full flow. A couple of bright spots but you have a good flow through the frame and detail on the rocks. Thanks.
Dougie.

Hi Stephen,
Nice one, here the close framing focuses more on the strong water movement as opposed to the fix rock than on the sikly rendering you could have got with a larger framing, it's different in impression but very dynamic and refreshing, even though I'm not sure I need the latter... ;-)
Ooops j'ai ecrit en anglais, desole !

These blurry waterfall shots can often be much too smooth and blurry for my taste, with the mushy water losing all touch with reality. I think you struck a good balance here though - there's a good sense of movement, and your framing works well too.
Bit of a shame about the branches at top right - maybe you could have got someone to hold them out of the way.
Good work though Stephen - I like it.

Cheers,
Ben

Hi Stephen,
Tight composition works well as it accentuates the strong flow of water. Technically flawless and I don't find the branches distracting. Now if only there were a few red/yellow leaves lying around. Best wishes,
Hakan

Hello Dear Stephen,

This is a very dramatic photograph of the rushing waters of the River Creed. The slow shutter speed accentuates the volume of the water flow. Thee branches in the upper right are critical to the composition, presenting sharp resolution as a counterpoint to the blurred water.

Thank you for the Season's Greetings. I would, in turn, like to wish you and your family a happy and prosperous Holiday Season.

hi stephen,
lovely crop on this small waterfall, your daring composition and your judicious speed contributes to a pleasant final result.

Hello Stephen,

I find your image very nice, I like the streaming of the river together with the two small waterfalls.
Also the details on the big stones give a nice image, excellent composition and pleasant for look it.
Thanks for sharing.

Have a nice weekend you and Janice,
John.

Bonjour Stephen,

Hello Stephen,
A few autumn leaves on the rocks tell the story of the season!
A simple composition with good dynamics, fine diagonal movement...
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Stephen,
Very nice to see you more often here.
1/10 sec.s created almost a long exposed photo, i like the silky texture of the flowing water. The brown leaf at the right bottom adds color :)
Cheers,
Deniz

Hi Stephen,
Well composed and perfect effect with this this timing, interesting and beautiful result.

lovely shot Stephen,
I like the pov , the speed of the water in a freesing image, the little details as the red flower on the rock, very nice photojob here, have a fine sunday.

Hi Stephen
This is a great photo!Very nice image and wonderful colours...
Excellent work.

Hi Stephen, the motion effect of the water works very nice, it is ideal here.
The light balance is also very good and the fine colors are very good to see.
Marry Christmas to you and be healthy.

Hi Stephen
Nice to see that you still post a picture now and then:)
Very nice picture and as always a good note from you.
I wish you a good Christmas and new year as well.

hi stephen,
a gorgoeus shot i must say. i see the long exposure effect worked well here. the branches don't bother me, infact i see it so naturally a part of this capture.
i wished you happy holidays as well and as what Plimrn has always mentioned HLJ to you and everyone on TE.

Hi Stephen

Hello my friend Stephen,
i like this 'sedate' shot it's interesting one, of course not as tremendous as the previous. Some parts of the River's water are brown and this is not a usual phenomenon.Yow pause the flow of the river very successfully, not absolutely, and this is a good idea i think and give more dynamic in the scene. The point of view including the angular turn, create depth and perspective.Informative your note too.

Have a nice week,Danos
PS thank you for your wishes about the Christmas and the new year.I wish you too.

Bonjour, Stephen.

Hello Stephen

Hello Stephen. I have to say everytime I see a water photo I take notice of the shutter speed, and recall what the water effect looks like. I have taken some photos between 1/10 of a second right up to 1/2 of a second which creates an interesting feeling of flow. Excellent results here with this one and the longer exposure in the workshop. Thanks for sharing!

very good shot, nice view on the river, unusual colours of water. Well composed image. I like it a lot. Good work.

Hello there Stephen.

Very nice Christmas shot, the rushing water so close to the camera, and so well captured. I like the two little waterfalls facing in different directions, and the brown colouring which you have explained. One half expects a salmon to jump out of the water while looking at it. Teriffic capture with a nice light falling on the scene.
Hope you enjoy Christmas and the New Year!

Hello Stephen,
a wild and owndeful stream, complimented well by the pem extract. I like your composition as the water moves through the frame in zigzag.
All the best for Chrsitmas and New Year.
Bev

- Superb composition, you succeeded in restoring the speed of water and perhaps you wanted further to increase the duration of the exposure but you did not have a filter, it's better thus, you would have had fuzzy water but less this impression of speed, impeccable like-that, bravo!
giorgio
* Yes, you understood well, Steph' this lantern obstructed me but I was at the edge of a terrace and I could not advance more for a better PoV.

Hello, Stephen,
I like this shot. The water actually looks like water and the details of the rocks are excellent. I love the tiny bits of odd color here and there on them. I think the branches add a really nice touch, actually. Very well done!! Thanks and warm regards,
Shelly

Hi Stephen,
The slow exposure worked well here creating a dynamic water. Good clarity of details ... I like the way the moss added color to the stones. Wonderfully captured and composed. Well done! tfs

Bonsoir Stephen,

Hi Stephen,
I've just finished to taste a cappuccino and have to say that the color of water with the foam downside, reminds me exactly this superb drink (:D. Spectacular close-up capture with well chosen timing. I also don't like the exaggerated long exposures and the heavy and unnatural silky effects of the water obtained that way. Very good one, my friend! I wish you and your Family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Bien vu et merci pour le partage !!

Stephen bonjour.
Jacques

I like both this one and the WS. Even with 1/10 second you have shown the fast movement of the water. I like the way you have taken it diagonally. The rocks are nice and sharp too. Well done
Happy Christmas to you too, although it feels early to me yet.;D

Hi Stephen
I must say that I prefer the one second picture.I like how the water looks like a curtain, all smoothness. The composition is dynamic, with a diagonal line of the water.
The details of the rocks are sharp with good colors, thanks to the tripod.
I have been, and still is playing at the rapids here, mostly at sunrise and sunset.Qute cold temperature. Now snow has arrived and I get different scenery as the ice and the snow accumulates. These rapids never freeze over.I am waiting for a very cold morning, like -30c,as there will be a lot of water evaporation at this place, will be different.

I will post them eventually, when I found time.
Have a good WE
Charles

Hi Stephen,a lovely well composed shot. The brown water really makes this shot special,I like your timing on this one.
Everything is sharp, all the details on the rocks show so clearly.
May I wish you a very Happy Christmas, and I look forward to seeing your shots in 2008.

Hi Stephen,

hope you and yours are well.
Simple, intimate, and beautiful view .. I love how you have kept control of the water in the exposure .. and kept all the branches crisp and not blowing in the wind .. a very nice meditative beauty.

take care,

John

Nice close viewpoint Stephen, great effect with the shutter speed to blur the water but not too much. Wonderful sharpness to show the textures of the rocks.

cheers
