In this shot I want to show you one of the escalators that I photographed in the Tate Modern while I was employed there, while patrolling the galleries at night (believe me, very eiry) I liked the way the escalator was all lite while its surroundings were all in darkness, so I rested the camera at the bottom and came up with this shot, for the purpose of my theme I converted it to black and white. The Tate has a total of 6 escalators running from level one to level 5.

But... I don’t want to stop here, because my theme is about the Tate I would like to add a few more facts about this interesting place and which was my place of work for 7 years.

Bankside power station was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1963, it was finally shut down in 1982 due to the increase in oil prices, then in 1994 works started to convert it to today’s Tate Modern - a national museum of modern art, by 2 swiss architects - Pierre de meuron and Jacques Herzog. Tate Modern was created due to the increasing lack of space in the original Tate in Milbank; it was not big enough to house the huge increase of art works.

Tate Modern is in the heart of London and is linked to St Paul’s Cathedral by the Millennium footbridge, which is 900 feet long or 300 meters. The building consists of a brick-clad steel structure, constructed from more than 4 million bricks, The height of the central chimney is 325 feet or 99 meters and it was left in the final rebuilding plans so the visitors wouldn’t get lost trying to find it, the chimney was made lower than St Paul’s Cathedral dome on purpose by 50 feet or 15 meters.

Along the length of the roof, which is a noticeable change to the old power station is a 2 storey glass structure or light beam, this was built so it would provide natural light in the top rooms, at the very top is a stunning cafe which provides outstanding views across London, Tate Modern has a total internal floor area of 34,5000 square metres, included in the building are the following:
6 escalators, 9 lifts (of which only 4 are for public use, 3 cafes, 3 shops, support services, members room, seated auditorium, a special exhibition suite hall where works of art are shown, gallery suites for displays and exhibitions,

Ciao Joao Paulo.
Good pov, graphic use of black and white.
The composition is really original.
Best regards
Renzo

Hello Joao,

Very good choice of the point of view in order to create a perfect simmetry in this picture. Black & White is perfect for this subject and increases the great geometric aspect. Very well done !

I really like the black/white, but most of all the great judgment of available light, nothing too bright, nothing too dark.

Maybe some noise would give it a more rough feel to express that alone, nightly-feel?

The only, small remark i have is what that circle-thing is in the middle, bottom part of your shot?

Hi Joao,
I like the symmetry and control of grey which increases the impression of the shot...
Well done
Deniz

Hi Joao
You were lucky to be able to take photos while working. Plus you had the time. Superb graphic pov with lots of depth. I like your interesting pp accentuating the contrasts and shininess.
Regards
Nikki

Olá Joao Paulo,

I like this shot very much, with gleaming steel, symmetric perspective, and showing a place I like very much. Moreover, your note is excellent. I am impressed that you had worked in the great art gallery. Warm regards,

Bulent

Hello
Very nice picture. I like how the metal parts are glittering. It creates wonderful graphical aspect and interesting texture effects.

Great shot. Nice eye to find this futuristic scene. The POV is very well chosen. Thanks for sharing.

Very nicely balanced black and white shot..nice contrast and tones.

An interesting POV and the B&W presentation works well to accentuate the metal.
Nicely done.

Hi Joao,

That's a shot you can only get when you work there, since the escalators are normally running (and full of people) you'd never get such a compo with a 1 second exposure! Nice work.

Greetings,
Dennis

Hi Joao Paulo, this is a great B&W conversion, full of sharp contrasts & excellent tones. Perfect POV and symmetry. Best regards, Roberto

Hello Joao Paulo,
the idea is brilliant and the execution even more. Great graphic shot. The monochromatic effect gives a very interesting endresult.

Hello Salas

Have been seeing many themes on 'symmetry' on the pages..by far this has been the most satisfying one visually.

The light deflected off textures of steel and fibre glass is alot varied and difficult to control in terms of exposure. Here in this youve managed the conditions so well..The shades..the sharpness..absolutely a treat..it looks perfect..no distortions wahtsoever

Surely a winner for me :)

Cheers

Fine graphical symmetry. This photo really makes impression. And the note is didactic, too.

Amazing BW tones here, Joao Paulo, and also all the lines are fantastic, looks like an old art photograph, compliments!

Hello Salas,
Very impressive graphical effect!! I mostly liked the symmetry...your choice of B&W suits the photo very well. In my opinion, the light adjustment is also brilliant. No figures, but empty escalators....perfect scene.
Congratulations.
All the best.

Hello Joao,
a superb very graphic and futuristic image with these metal and impersonal colors. Excellent realization. Cheer.
Have a nice day

Amazing symmetry and contrasts! Wooaw! By the way, you were the first to post a picture of the crack from the Tate, right? I did not know about it. Anyway, that one is a woaaw definitely!

This is absolutely amazing João. Brutal!!!! From the framing, to the roughness of the sideways, the perfection of a metal heart with a solid mind... Beautiful!! This one is a hallmark!!!

VEry well seen and captured the symmetry of those stairs and let me congratulate you for the use of clarify
Have a nice weekend

ricardo

With regards from Luxembourg

Excellent point of view on these moving stairs. although I am not really keen on B&W pictures, it works very nicely here with the gleaming aspect of the metal shining under th light. A finely tuned and well thought composition.

All the best,

Emmanuel
