Photographer’s Note
A Gatekeeper butterfly (also known as Hedge Brown).
There were quite a number of them flying just above the long grass and close to a privet hedge. This was the best shot I could manage, the slightest movement and they are away!
The Gatekeeper is a butterfly most seen on field edges and hedgerows and appears from mid July through to mid August.
Photo cropped and sharpened edges.

Beautifully placed in the frame. Left wing and body are nice and clean with loads of detail, whereas the right wing falls outside the DOF range. For most macros you need substantially higher than f-2.8 to keep overall DOF, possibly f-8 or higher.

Perfect shot Andy. Wonderful colours and very clever use of dof all put together in a great composition. Well done and thanks for sharing this beautiful butterfly.
