Photographer's Note

Whitby is always busy but this weekend it was even more so because of the whitby regatta.

Some info Whitby regatta has been running for 168 years and is proberly the oldest regatta in england, it provides 3 days of aquatic competitions and entertainment ranging from childrens fancy dress to displays by the R.A.F. RED ARROWS
It started in a small way with local fishermen competing against other in there small fishing smacks and salmon cobbles , then in 1847 yachts started to compete for the"whitby challenge cup" promoted by the ROYAL YORKSHIRE YACHT CLUB" and a prize of 50guineas , up to the 1930`s yacht racing formed the main part of the regatta but due to the high cost of these yachts they slowley started to disappear.. It was in 1872 that competitive rowing racing started, that year the jet works ameteur rowing club was formed and in 1874 saw the birth of scarbourgh rowing club and 1879 the frendship rowing club was formed , and in 1912 whitby fishermans club all there clubs are still going today and its these that provide most of the attractions on the water today.
