| Often mistaken for London Bridge, which is now in California, the Tower Bridge crosses the Thames River. It looks extremely old and imposing, probably because it's so near the Tower of London, hence the name, but it was built in the 19th century. A fixed bridge wouldn't work because of the need for port access, so a Bascule suspension bridge was built. It's about 800 feet long and the two towers are 213 feet high. Construction began in 1886 and took eight years to complete, employing a number of contractors. The two piers contain 70,000 tons of concrete and 11,000 tons of steel comprise the towers and walkways. It was opened for use in June, 1894 by the future Edward VII. Evidently initial reviews about its appearance were somewhat mixed, but it's become an icon for the city of London and is probably more appreciated today than it was when it was first constructed. The bridge had something of a seedy reputation as a haunt for prostitutes and pickpockets in the early 20th century, but in recent years exhibits have focused more on its technical importance. A computer system installed in 2000 now controls the raising and lowering of the bascules remotely. |
