Poole, situated on the shores of the English Channel, is famed for its large natural harbour, and is one of the main centres of sailing in England. The harbour is reputed to be the second largest natural harbour in the world after Sydney and has been a working port for many hundreds of years. This was one of a number of harbouring sites where the Romans landed during the first century. In the 15th century it became an important port for the exportation of wool, but it had a less savoury reputation as well since it was home to the pirate Harry Paye, which resulted in its being burned to the ground by the Spanish. Nonetheless it continued to grow in importance and was the busiest port in England at the start of the 18th century. The quayside and harbour was the place from which some ships departed for the D-Day landings of World War II. The ship skippered by the gentleman in this capture is the "Overlord," a name which commemorates that D-Day invasion.

Hello Silke,
I was in Poole exactly 20 years ago. Good photo of the skipper in seemingly deep thought. Image needs some sharpening. Regards,
Hakan

Hello Silke. Photo and text complement each other outstanding. Education purely. Now I know to begin something with the term Overlord. Also with this photo the 18-200mm was objectively again very helpful. A fantastic snapshot. Best regards, Wolfgang.

Hi Silke,

A nice portrait of this gentleman, the photo has a good composition, sharpness and nice colors. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Hello Silke,
I do like this! The shot looks to be un-posed and representative of the 'man at work'. The sharpness, detail and strong colours are all important in the overall effect.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Silke,

Very rich color and so natural; Indeed, the photo does'nt need increasing the saturation and/or other post-processing.

Hi Silke. This is a fine nautical portrait of this sea-captain looking sailor. Excellent work via the tele lens. Good notes with it too. Murray.

Hi Silke,
Wonderful capture of this gentelman as he grimly serveys the weather ahead. The yellow makes a very nice contrast with the pale green sea. Excellent historic note to go with this fine image.
Regards, Tom
