Another landscape in portrait format today, but something that is a little different, technically at least....

I shot this at f/4 with the intention of only keeping an area of the stream in sharp focus. Not sure if it works, but I like it for a change of 'feel'.

Processing wise, the RAW image was 'developed' three times at -1, 0 and +1 stops of exposure compensation in software. These three images were then combined HDR style in Photomatix before the usual stuff I do in Photoshop i.e. barrel distortion fix, horizon straighten, levels adjustment, curves adjustment, clone out sensor dust, crop, sharpen and frame.

Thanks for looking
Craig

Wonderful exposition balancing in Photomatix. But I think that the time of the day was selected as well very precisely.

Just by chance - I added today as well own photo using Photomatix :-)

Hi Craig,
So...you thought let's make a favorite for Henk? ;-)
Well my friend you are right...it is..!!!
What a perfect composed and what's even more important exposed image. I love this picture in every way. What photography is all about is light, and that light is in this one so beautiful...wish it was mine..!!!
Have a nice en good weekend, Henk
p.s
I still need those Lee filters....you convinced me once again.

Hi Craig,
Great composition. Thanks for the techinque explanation in your fine note. The colors are amazing and it has got a remarkable depth. Like the clouds in the sky. Looks like UFO's.
Well done.
Fred

i've got to learn how to process HDR properly..:D this is a lovely shot.

Bonjour Craig,
This compo is excellent !
Your wide angle use is perfect, I like how you included this foreground, and colors and tones are spot on.
Nice job,
Regards,
JB.

Craig hi,as i have mentionted many times before, your landscape shots from the beautiful North are of the best!Perfectly sharpened and amazing sky!
Cheers

Hi Craig,

Nice composition and colours, I think f4 worked well here and it's a change to see the water 'frozen' by a fast shutter speed rather than the usual softening with a slow speed.

Best regards,
Paul.

Hi Craig,
very beautiful nature shot. Subject, lighting and framing look really good.
Regards
Andreas

With such a wide angle lens, depth of field is so great that even shooting at f4 would have a minimal effect. It's much harder to achieve a shallow depth of field with digital wide lenses as even though (for example) an 18mm lens has the same angle of view as a 28mm lens on 35mm, it still has the depth of field characteristics of an 18mm lens. Of course when you get down to the super wides like your 10-22mm, the problem is even more pronounced.
For example, with my 20mm lens on a film camera I can get a nice shallow depth of field, but with my Sigma 10-20mm set at 15mm (same effective focal length) a shallow depth of field is impossible to achieve. That's with both lenses set to the same aperture by the way.
This difficulty of achieving a shallow depth of field with wide angle lenses is one of the main reasons why I'm looking forward to the day when Nikon brings out a (affordable) full frame camera. The D3 will almost certainly be full frame, but I imagine it will a long way out of my price range.

You took this in really beautiful light, and your composition works very well. The water channel leads the eye into the frame very effectively and the side lighting has brought out the details of bird footprints and pebbles in the foreground very well.
I do think it would have worked better with an aperture of f8 or f11 though. It looks like a slight lack of sharpness rather than intentionally shallow depth of field. As I said though, the effect of the shallow depth of field with focal lengths this wide is no small that you'd be pushed to notice it.
Overall, a very good shot.

Cheers,
Ben

Hello Craig,
Great landscape with an excellent lighting.
I like the rocs in the foreground and your sky is very nice.
Greetings.
Igor

Very beautiful! I like the birds paces in the front. Scotland and UK have such a beautiful light. This composition is really well seen.
