I captured this small hover fly feeding on the nectar of a little flower called London Pride which we have growing in our garden. The plants flowers are 1 cm diameter approx.
The hover fly (family syrphidae) is a common insect in most gardens. There a many species of this insect which vary in size, some of the largest are sometimes mistaken for wasps.
The Hover fly larvae eat aphids (greenfly)so are a good friend of the gardener! |

Nice colors. I like the composition and the shallow DOF. The colors are very good too. You and Jaap (carper) have similar style.
Hi Andy
I like your exposure here, and the way the fly is sitting on the flower. However, if you crop it vertically, omitting everything to the left of the fly and its flower, you will get much more impact and loose the white and light green currently in the left, distracting the eye from the fly.

Good shot, the lighting is excellent - reflected off the fly's eye and thorax. The detail of the fly is good along with the plant stalk.
