Photographer’s Note

Detail of a merry-go-round taken on the seafront. I don't think the horses are supposed to scare the children, but they do look a bit frightening with all those teeth showing ;)

Brighton has a long history, and was even mentioned in the Domesday book of 1086, back then it was referred to as Bristelmestune and commanded a rent of 4000 herring - and yes, apparently the rent was collected in fish!

Fairground carousels have a history even longer than Brighton itself - apparently the earliest known image dates back to 500AD. Curiously the direction carousels rotate varies from country to country - this one rotated clockwise, but according to Wikipedia those in the US rotate anti-clockwise - the direction of rotation is apparently linked to the side of the road on which we drive!
