Lacock Abbey
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Lacock Abbey was, according to its current guardians The National Trust, founded in 1232 by Ela Countess of Salisbury as a nunnery for augustinian canonesses.
After the Dissolution by Henry VIII, the abbey was sold to William Sharington who, in 1539, started the conversion to a family home.
However (and for me this is the REALLY interesting bit, William Henry Fox Talbot bought the house and, in the mid 19th century added 3 new oriel windows - one of which was used as the subject of the first known example of a photographic negative / positive photograph.
If you ever get the chance, go and have a look at this beautiful place. It's in Wiltshire (SE England) not far from Chippenham and Cirencester. |
