Shot on a warm late summer evening. I'm running out of warm evenings here in Shetland :-)

In this image, I was attracted firstly by the oversized post being used to act as the union between a fence and stone dyke. The aged wood with it's weathered textures and colours was enhanced by the late sun.

The sky was starting to take on the colours of sunset as well.

In terms of composition I liked the way the three elements of the gate, post and wall all came together at right angles, creating a very geometric, yet natural form. I used a wide angle to exaggerate the form of the post.

The white dot on the horizon of the sea is a departing ship catching the light.

An ND Grad was used to hold back the exposure of the sky and fill flash to bring out the details of the post and fence that was not in direct sunlight.

Usual post processing; barrel distortion correction, levels adjustment, sharpenning, crop, framing.

Thanks for looking

Craig

Hi Craig!
Interesting composition with this dominant post.Good lines and diagonals and great depth given by the wall. The warm evening light makes the colors nice and natural.
Regards,Leo

In my short experience i discovered that things of different forms and colour catch my eyes. I always end up asking myself isn't it worth a shot? i think this photo helped me a lot in realizing that such objects make part of a bigger scenery. everything seem to fit together and make sense in the photo including the ship on the horizon.

I guess the answer to my question in this case is yes...the post was worth the shot!!

Thanks Graig

Great light in this! The soft sunlight shows details, but still allows us to see the shadows. I like the contrast between the warm light and the cool blue of the stones and the sky. Good composition too, with the stone fence, wooden fence and the post all radiating out from one spot. Excellent!

Hi Craig,
An excellent composition backed up an equally impressive note. The light is simply magical creates a beautiful mood. Well Done!

Creative composition. Another person (like me) would not have found anything interesting to take. Bravo!

Hello Craig,

It's a very good use of the great angle. Congratulations !

Christophe

Hi Craig,

What a light here! It gives a red tonality very beautiful in the pole, in the wall and overall in the sky. Amazing colors, and amazing composition than show an inmense perspective. The verticality of pole is a big contrast with the wall line. Perfect! Thanks!

Angel.

Good afternoon Craig -

Outstanding image! I like the in your face fence post and stone fence leads the eye into the image to discover a beautiful pastel sunset sky. The POV is different and makes the image while the DOF, exposure, sharpness, etc. just add more quality to the image. Love it!

Thank you for sharing

Hello Craig, it certainly is an interesting compo. The light is near and far has beautiful warm tones which really bring the composition to life. Very nice work, well seen.

Hi Craig,
Great composition and POV. Love the dominant post in the foreground leading the eye along the lovely stone wall. Love the contrast between the colours and textures of the wall and post and the soft colours of the water and sky. Truly lovely! TFS :-)
Cheers Tina

Fun with a wide angle and graduated filter!
They're great tools aren't they? You've used them superbly well, with a great choice of subject, great light, great point of view.
Excellent job indeed

Serwus Craig !
Very professional wide angle. The chosen diagonal composition with the strong element in the forground is powerful. Longer exposure brought fantastic hues of dusk. Wonderful image.
Thank You and best wishes,
M.

A very striking composition Craig, and superb use of the wide-angle lens.
The strong lines of the stone wall and the gate have given this quite a graphic quality that I like very much.
Great colours and beautiful light.

I love the composition Craig. This is a real eye catcher. That post is so dominate, with nice warm light on the one side, and so dark on the other. All the angles you created with the fence, and the horizon, make this very interesting. Very creative shot, and very nicely captured.

Hi Craig

Great composition, light and colours. I like the wide angle here. Something refreshisg among all the landscapes here.

Greetings
Grzegorz

Interesting pov to compose depth and atmosphere. The dof is OK and the wall in the diagonal enhances the perspective. Well composed.

Excellant shot, Craig. The perspective created with the wide angle lens of the stone wall and post works very well together. Colors are well saturated.
