We had just climbed the cliff path from the fishing village of Staithes to this farm. There are many farms at the tops of the cliffs in the area, and I find that interesting, as I don’t know how common that is in other counties. Also the cliffs in this area are unstable and very susceptible to erosion.
This is a fairly simple image showing as the title suggests, farming by the sea. I quite like the pattern made by the stacked hay-rolls. The cliff, Cowbar Nab, from my previous posts is just visible. In the WS there are two other shots from the walk that would fit this title.
Please see previous posts from the walk in the travelogue (left)

The compo is simply superb. And the colours you have here are not 'punchy', but gentle and beautiful. What impresses me even more is the lighting you have on the rolls, which lifts this already beautiful pic to an even higher standard. Congratz :)

I like the contrast of golden haystacks, blue sea and sky and green freshly mowed grass. It's strange to see such view more suitable to some pasturage in Alps, here very near the sea...

It is harvest time all over Europe, and it for sure shows in TE..!
You capture some wonderful late summer colours here, and the repeating round shapes contrast well with horizontal lines!

A wonderful rural scene. Somestimes you wonder if farmers help us photographers by putting the hay-rolls in interesting patterns. Here the farmer has obviously build something for you. And you have made the very best of it. The composition of high-rolls, blue sky, a deeper blue sea and the green grass is superb.
Graal (102642) 2006-09-02 9:02
good idea on the composition, plesant view, peaceful atmosphere. I like the colours also. Good work.
Rossignol (2289) 2006-09-02 9:48
Very nice shot, I like the division of the frame by the diagonal formed by the stack of round hay bales and the deep blue of the North Sea, sandwiched between blue sky and green pasture is really effective. There are quite a few farms on the coast here in Suffolk too, though the cliffs are not as high as those around Staithes (but equally prone to erosion.)
priyasri_80 (363) 2006-09-02 10:25
Nice pic. The hay bundle on the left and the view of the water on the right is magnificient.
plimrn (21344) 2006-09-02 11:20
This is awesome. As many comment, the colors are wonderful, just perfect shades of blue, green and the brightly contrasting gold. The blues appears almost transparent they are so clear. The angle of the light across the hay bales gives great detail. Then there are all the sharp lines showing the exactness of your focus and the steadiness of your your hand; the horizon, the cliff edge with the line of fence posts, the angles made by the closer fence posts. The fat, voluptuously-rounded bales of hay contrast with the angling lines. Just Stunning!!
Larry calls the farms around Nova Scotia, "Salt Water Farms" He says you're never more than 35 miles fromn the ocean, that his uncle could hear the lobster boats down in the channel from his 'inland' farm. I'll have to see if I have have a salt-water farm worth posting.

Another beauty Kath! The image is so well composed with the hay bails on the left leading us to the contrasting green and blue. The sky is beautiful. Nice lighting too.

It's the kind of photo composition I see in glossy photo mags. Congratulations for a job well done. Best wishes.

pasternak (15183) 2006-09-02 14:32
This is so nice, Kath! Hayrolls are so abundant on TE nowadays, that I am always interested in something else than lonely species, and your arrangement is refreshing and works quite nice here, as it catches pleasant sidelight. A gorgeous background as well with so bright colours!
lasscor (7640) 2006-09-02 14:46
Great contrast between the sea and the rolls.
Great blue sky, nice light on the rolls.
josepmarin (58357) 2006-09-02 15:46
these rolls to the left of the picture, in contrast to the beautiful blue sea of background, they form a simple and very peculiar composition. The rolls after the harvest are an image of the field, typical of summer time, but he is not habitual to see them so near the sea. For that reason I think that your composition is very good, besides to be very well illuminated and with beautiful colors.
barrufeto_77 (28886) 2006-09-02 16:14
Excellent composition and colours. The contrasts are lovely.
gilou530 (34) 2006-09-02 17:39
trés belles ces meules de foin, avec la mer en fond un peu comme celle que j'ai posté dernierement, les couleurs sont superbes et trés bonnes lumiére
Gerrit (51935) 2006-09-03 1:10
simple but strong image. The light on the hayrolls works very good.

Excellent composition here: the different colours are very well mixed and the view on the cliffs in the background is attractive.
Thanks for sharing.

Have a nice day,
Lynette (1615) 2006-09-03 9:18
The rolls to the left in contrast to the beautifull blue sea background, form a simple but beautifull composition. Good depth of colour and pov leading the eye from the left perspective through to the lovely skyline.
agbonavita (0) 2006-09-03 10:57
Very pretty photo Kath, that rolls are very intersting, I never saw it here in Brazil. I like the POV with the sea in the background with suberb colors.
renerob (601) 2006-09-03 17:18
Good shot nice composition colours just perfect good POV very nice indeed Kath, well done.
cherryripe (21033) 2006-09-04 3:43
This is one of the more interesting hay roll shots on TE thanks to the contrasting colours. The light on them is excellent. I like the fence posts too which add depth. The sky is superb with all the little clouds.
rosaline (0) 2006-09-04 4:04
This is a great and powerful composition. I think this picture has one of the most powerful impacts of all of your shots. The hay rolls dominate the scene but still leave a nice areas for the effect of the sea and lush green grass to come through. Very nice work.
sergio1 (12152) 2006-09-04 4:07
I like very much this picture. The compo and pov are the best. But the sky and lights are very good too. Good depth.
coco (30439) 2006-09-04 6:01
Splendid colours, really beautiful colours.
And also a good composition with a good depth.
Regards from Spain.

I like a lot the play of light and shadow on these hay-rolls! They are placed very nicely in the shot, so we have a wonderful view over the very blue sea at the right hand side of the picture. The colours are all very attractive. Good work, thanks for sharing!
Stepan (27210) 2006-09-04 16:19
Wow !! What a sky ! What beautiful colors ! What a great composition. Your pov is excellent, your realization perfect. Beautiful.

Hay rolls is a concept not so common in our part of the world but it seems in Europe it is a common feature of the harvesting season. I have seen quite a few posts on TE but this one simply stands out because of the strong combination of the green field and the blue sea and the sky. Well seen and well captured.
With Greetings from India
Paolo (41222) 2006-09-05 6:31
Hi Kath, excellent composition, with a perfect balance between the 2 parts.
excellent colours and POV too.
john_c (24666) 2006-09-05 10:41
A well composed capture of this wonderful scene, with the light nicely striking the bales of hay. I like the depth obtained here and the contrast between the golden hay and the blue and green tones. The only other place I have seen this kind of farming by the sea on high cliff areas is in northern California where there are many cattle ranches, but the grass is not so green unless heavily irrigated...The little fence posts here add further perspective. Well captured.
bertolucci (13362) 2006-09-05 17:29
You made a very good use of the beautiful light and your polarizer here Kath, and the combination of the hay-rolls and the sea makes this one rather special. The colours are gorgeous and the high lights on the rolls are the icing on the cake. Thanx for sharing this, very good work.
timleahy (2195) 2006-09-05 19:03
It's harvest time again! Excellent shot. The exposure for the shaded bales is just right, yet the sky in background is not burnt out...how did you do that?
Angshu (56750) 2006-09-06 3:37
True there's an abundance of hayroll photos in TE, but I don't think I've seen one where they are stacked. It's new to me, since we do not have these in India. I like the patterns of the sunlit portions of the hay rolls & how the rolls lead our eyes in a diagonal along the greens into the deep blue sea. Fascinating compo.
ALIRIZA (16423) 2006-09-06 5:47
A perfect shot. Superb diagonal composition, well framed. I like the colors (green & blue tones), sharpness and light a lot.
Well done my friend...
arjun_das (1851) 2006-09-07 3:28
nice pov to place the hay rolls in right place in your framing. colours tones are interesting too. good perspective view too. tfs.
lukas (2067) 2006-09-07 11:15
Great picture, i'm glad you or someone else added it to my theme "rolls of straw"
deano (178) 2006-09-08 5:54
Hi Kath, just popped in to say hello. This is a great shot. I like the way you have used the hay rolls on the left and given us a view of the sea to the right, great idea that demonstrates the title well. Great work, well done. How are you getting on with that macro lens? I am sure you have mastered it well, still waiting for your shots to appear on TN. Have a great week, all the best.
papagolf21 (99860) 2006-09-21 5:34
Très belle composition, Kath, avec un cadrage particulièrement soigné.
Bravo, pour cette réalisation.
