Scott Monument in Edinburgh.

Standing proud on Princes Street in Edinburgh, the Scott Monument rises 200 feet (61 metres). Built by George Meikle Kemp, the monument is a tribute to Sir Walter Scott. It was built between 1840 and 1844.

It is a total of 287 steps to the top and all the stairs are spiral and quite narrow in places. Some visitors have been known to get a little freaked out in the narrow stairwell where there is very little light.

Built of sandstone, naturally a rich yellow, the much darker colour is caused by pollution. Modern thinking in building resoration is that the grime should be left as it prolongs the life of the soft stone.

This shot was taken from the first level reached on the ascent to the top. The colours of the stone were amazing from this angle, hence the chosen point of view.
