In my opinion one of the best ways to explore a country is to go hiking for a couple of days or weeks. Your feet can bring you at locations that will never be visited by other ways of travel and walking brings you as close to nature as you can possibly be.

Scotland is a very hikers-friendly part of the world. I am now referring to the marvellous footpaths, great scenery and very friendly people. Not really for the weather... However, when we were 'doing' the West Highland Way in August 2002, we had only one day of rain during our nine-day hike from Milngavie (near Glasgow) to Fort William (approximatly 150 km). I can really recommend this route to anybody who wants to enjoy Scotland!

The picture was taken at the North end of Loch Lomond, near the village of Inverarnan. In my humble opinion, this scenery is typical for Scotland: low clouds, a lake ("loch"), hills and a small house. And all this is why I love Scotland so much!

This view really is typical of rural Scotland. The flat lighting, the threat of rain from the clouds hanging over the hill tops, even the red corrugated iron roof of the shed. It's a lovely composition. Initially I thought about cropping off some of the grass in the foreground but I think it balances the area of sky really nicely.
It isn't necessary to have sun, blue sky and white fluffy clouds to create a really great landscape. Nice work.

A well composed shot of my home country. The small red roof on the right introduces a nice touch of colour Thank you Michael.

It's funny, because my wife and I are off to a couple of weeks hiking on Tenerife shortly, and you are so right about getting close to nature that way. And although it's a different place, what we are hoping for is exactly the kind of views and atmosphere that you have caught. A good landscape photo tells a lot about the photographers's love of nature. And one of these days we will be taking our camper back up to Scotland for some of what you convey so well in your picture. And you manage to leave a bit of mystique: Is that stonelodge inhabited or not? It's hard to tell.

A lovely, well-composed pastoral scene. My Border Collie would feel right "at home" here. ;-)

I can surely conncct with this kind of landscape. Never went there, but I think it's part of my dreams (asleep and awakened). Fine composition and colors are very natural.

Magnifique endroit que j`ai eu la chance de visiter....grace à vous....
Bel équilibre technique....
Bravo...

Oh yes this is wonderful. I never saw this country apart on photographs, but more and more I feel like going there. Thank you for sharing Michael.

Beautiful landscape. Lovely soft colours. I like the old cottage on the left with its small windows. Good note.

Loch Lomond is a name I heard often from my Scottish immigrant family. A place I have been advised to go walking. Now I know why, this picture is very inviting.

A lovely shot, great contrast between the buildings in the foreground and the mountains to the rear. Perfect positioning, well done!
