The weather has been awful here lately with unremitting flat grey skys however yesterday the grey broke up a bit and it even looked like it might snow.
I have 3 shots waiting for just such conditions so ever optomistic I shot off to Cambridge (1 is in the American cemetary) but by the time I got there the grey was back and it was raining again.
I walked around Cambridge and turned a corner behind Kings College i think and walked into this film set (the last of the light made the buildings look like cut outs).
Long exposure (26 sec) just as the street lamps lit(1st was rather flatter and 3rd the lamps were burning out everything).
Converted to B&W in PS, adjusted curves and cropped slightly.
Happy New Year all.

Another superb shot Richard - excellent tonal range. I'm glad there are no people about to spoil it!

Beuatiful B&W shot Rich especially with the really dark grey sky. Very clear and texture are great. Good angle as we still can see both sides building, both pavements and the whole road.

This surely proves that grey and dreary can be a photographer's friend. This is a superb exposure and use of b/w. I love the street lamps, their reflections, the sky and the overall mood of the empty street.

I like the composition, the way the road leads my eye into the photo. Nice choice of bw here.

Very nice composition, nice used of Black & White tone. The framing is also great. Well done!

Very interesting. Maybe because of lack of shadows but it looks to me as a perfect decoration for some "film noir" or thriller.
And happy NY.

I would have liked it more with a soft sepia, but even then, it's just a great sharp and well framed picture!
No apparent sign of modernity... A movie set? Mmmm... They are right. Why did I have to think to Dickens? Maybe it's the time of year... ;o)
ilouy (3370) 2003-12-30 12:58
Magnifique photo N&B. Le contraste est excellent, j'aime! Les petits reflets des lampe au sol font bien ressortir que la pluie est tombé. Vous avez choisi un très bon cadrage! Bien vu!

Here the awful weather conditions fit perfectly for this shot. The long exposure has brought out so much details. Well done.
ninadev (5377) 2003-12-30 23:41
Very nice atmospheric shot. Nice sky against which the buildings look quite sharp. Well done.

Couldn't help but chuckle when I saw your title, as I am partial to Kings College for a number of reasons, least of all that I work at Columbia University in NYC (which was founded as Kings College in the City of New York by George I). As for this image, let me first mention that splash of light on the sidewalk in the foreground. It is perhaps that subtle touch that lends grounding and renders this already exquisite image even more powerful. Sometimes it's something as simple as that which can transform an image to something more profound. Great work.

Great subject, perfectly presented. I particularly like the lack of people or cars.
Your note too is helpful in capturing the feel and the place. Very good work.

Very beautifull BW photo...
digiken (105) 2004-01-13 18:18
I love the perspective (winding road angle) and (as you described) how the buildings look almost like "cutouts." I think the shine of the lights contributes to the "movie set" look. The one thing I don't care for too much is the one bright light source on the upper right (amost looks like a bounced flash).
maciekda (19895) 2004-01-25 1:55
it is beautiful, those gray tones create a very special atmosphere, the scene is very soft, the sky is like a silk... there is no people, the street is empty, what a mood
and I had to try a workshop..

Your photo has me lost for words. I can't even begin to tell you the mixed emotions I get from this. It makes me want to hide like a spy!
Just perfect. Looks like it came out of a 1920's Gangster movie! I added it to my favourites! I would love to see the colour version.
Tom1971 (25) 2004-02-12 12:53
I like the way the light from the lamp has starred, rather than just coming out as a white blob. V. sharp front to back as well. What type of tripod/head did you use?
mcreider (673) 2004-03-14 16:08
Marvels of b/w, Nikkor PC - and of good taste!
The precision of the dominating grey tone is simply amazing.
jbvegas (2) 2004-03-14 16:38
this picture is amazing. if you look at it closely, it looks like a cgi. wow, nice shot, great lines.
Hanssie (10401) 2004-05-30 15:08
A splendid picture, nice b/w, which looks different from others.
I really like the rainy mood in the picture,
the wet street.
Beautiful one, Richard
kolesn (591) 2005-02-21 10:48
There is something unreal in this capture...
rowanb (864) 2005-04-13 5:13
you've conveyed such a moody atmosphere here.. love it
Meloe (99) 2005-09-27 9:39
An atmosphere that reminds me of Franz Kafka! Disturbing ans poetic at the same time...
MON (135) 2005-09-27 13:49
Excellent shot!. I like composition and B&W is a very good decision. I also like that picture is sharp.
Niara78 (0) 2006-01-05 22:27
Splendid DOV and perspective. Love those wet paves and the buildings reflecting in them. Grand work.
Suppaiku (85) 2006-01-09 13:12
A great pleasure, a perfect choice to use long exposure : everything is so sharp... Nice shot.
Dr_Nibbles (283) 2006-01-26 5:37
Really cool pic, b/w is very fitting, and the composition with the curve and the rather straight buildings adds something surreal to the scene.
alexwolf (0) 2006-02-21 7:59
There is something unreal on this shot. I cannot define, but this shot persuade me to look a it for a long time.
Magnificent shot, mate.
jedrek (36) 2006-02-21 8:04
Great tonality, composition and capture - although the B&W conversion is a little... surreal.
simplyoga (6492) 2006-07-18 22:59
I love B&W but I never could make a photo like this.
This is just beautiful.. I also love the atmosphere of this photo.
