Photographer’s Note
This shot has come out as fairly abstract but that was not my original intention. My mission was to capture a breaking wave against the pier supports on the lit up pier. Although I realised the slow shutter was going to blur the water, I thought the lights would help the exposure time more than they have.
It also occurred to me that the images I had taken already were brownish in colour and that was due to the type of lighting used on the pier, so I changed the white balance to tungsten knowing this would give a bluish cast. In actual fact the colours have come out more realistically and I am pleased with that.
That has explained my thinking. What I have is an abstract shot that although not what I expected I am pleased with. I like the misty atmosphere that appears like something from a witch’s cauldron. Now I wait to see what you think.

This is a very impressive picture. The reflection of the light on the pier is really good, but the post impressive is the wave, taken with this long exposure, giving a strange atmosphere to the shot. The compo is very good too. It reminds me of some pictures by greg64g.
Well done,
Yannick

Hi Kath,
I remembered the pier structure from your recent photos, so I knew what it was already in the preview, but accidentally or not, you made some great work here. I love those amazing light, colors and patterns; it brings an abstract dimension to this beautiful photo.
Cheers,
Alon

Very abstract indeed, and I would never have guessed how and where you had taken this, but I like it a lot. It is something you could frame and be very proud of. Isn't it amazing how sometimes some great shots are 'accidental'. Cheers . . . David

Good morning Kath -
Another very nice image from Northern Britan. I like your description of a witch's cauldron. To me it is an image that is full of mystery. It seems like everytime you try to capture moving water there is a good chance you will get something you did not plan on and some of the results will be interesting. This is one of those time.
Thanks for sharing

Hej Kath,
What a gorgeous picture with a very mystic atmosphere! The lines of the construction of the pier are also very nice, especially because of its colour and the little light on it. Wonderfully captured and thanx for sharing!

Hi Kath
this is the kind of photography that I love to do and have a look at .....
designs created by slow shutter speed
very impressive ... cheers ... sarju
PS: on my first glance I had thought it to be a massive morning mist ... but storm brewing up in the witch's couldron seems to be a better option

Hi Kath, An impressive long exposure effect. You have done a good job to catch the cloud-alike wave showing in this picture. Nice use of light. A very well taken photo.

Assez particulier Kath,
Les paramètres d'exposition transforment en effet cette photo d'un phénomène naturele et commun, en une oeuvre abstraite.
Bien vu en tout cas.

Hi Kath. Good job with the on-the-fly adjustments with the D70 as they seem very effective. And you were successful in achieving an abstract shot but not so abstract that the viewer can't figure out what they are looking at. Nice shot Kath!

Hi Kath,
Ah, here is something new and interesting, the close up view with the long exposure misty silky effect give another dimension to these pier tubes, more mysterious. The ultimate effect would be achieved with a ship emerging from this mist (random name: Titanic) or ... Nessie !
Have a nice week end,
Jean-Yves

Well, I think this turned out as one of your best yet, Kath. A beautiful and slightly mysterious-looking scene with the pier supports emerging from the blurry-rendered incoming tide. The wet reflections of light on the supports are cool and an essential add to the overall impact of this one. Very good.

Hey Kath...
I can't tell you how many hours I've spent sitting with my camera experimenting with light, movement, and exposure. That's part of the fun about photography- and thanks to digital much easier and cost efficient to do now.
I like the little whispy bits near the top of the water.
Well done Kath, keep having fun!

is this some kind of magic or is just a pier that is boiling in the water ;o)))
Let me say "WOW". It really turned out very well.

Hello !
Even if you did not expect it initially, the result is really nice and convincing ! I really like this misty atmosphere and the contrast between the very sharp and pinely-textured metal elements and the 'foggy' surrounding. thanks for sharing !

Experimantation is what gives interesting pictures such as this one. The moving wave is recorded nicely by the slow shutter speed. Great work Kath.
