Photographer’s Note

Llanuwchllyn Station of the Bala Lake Railway is not one of the typical welsh narrow gauge stations. The origins going back to the standard gauge Bala & Dolgelley Railway Company, which opened in 1868. When the Great Western Railway owned the line they enlarged Llanuwchllyn station in 1896 with a passing loop, a signalbox, a second platform and extended the station building. In 1965 the line was closed by British Rail.

The station is now the main terminus of the "Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid Cyf" or "Bala Lake Railway Ltd.". From here little Quarry Hunslets are hauling relative long trains over the now 4 1/2 miles long 2 feet narrow gauge line to Bala and back.

There is another photo at these pages showing the waiting room on platforn 2 under the title "Bala Railway Station North Wales". I had to post a photo of the real station buildings to this site. The quality isn't state of the art, but the 3 3/4 by 5 Inch print taken back in 1990 shows the buildings in full lenght. I am looking forward to see a proper picture on this pages.

The photo was reason enough for railway lover Nigel Cliff to visit the station and he posted a modern view.
