A small reminder of summer now gone by, another of the rescuees from the plant tunnels just resting before vanishing into the wide blue yonder, this male is one of the brighter coloured dragonflys in the UK.

Amazing shot. Very close and very clean. The colors are nice and the head looks so great ! The finger may be too much, but a shot is a shot ! They are so many detail. Very nice pic !
christiane (668) 2003-10-07 19:42
Unbelieveble! Perfect sharp and colors!
AdrianW (2274) 2003-10-07 20:07
Nice shot! I think compositionally it's probably your best to date - not ideal for identification though. I particularly like the way the dragonfly is shown against the sky, makes a pleasant change - almost all shots you see are against foliage... Very well captured :-D
Rupes (913) 2003-10-07 20:28
Wonderful macro shot!....beautiful colors,great details...Hey!Dragonfly it's looking to me!;)
bullybeef53 (3363) 2003-10-07 20:51
This picture is absolutely mind-boggling . It's detail is incredible . All I can say is "WOW".
How did you get so much detail ? It only goes to show they you can take an excellent picture . Congratulations .
chrischris (877) 2003-10-07 20:55
I agree with all above : this is a very nice maro shot. Why did you used f/8? Perhaps a lower f-number would have be more appropriate here, giving a more detailed shot... However, Unsharp mask has well worked. Very good frame, the dragonfly seems to look at me ;-). Beautiful capture!
kourosh (2346) 2003-10-07 23:25
it really looks like a helicopter! i find the blurred thing in the bottom a little distracting, tried to remove it in a workshop.
dovi (1068) 2003-10-08 1:19
Great macro shot, I wonder how did you make it rest on your finger long enough to captue this beautiful shot??!!
martin (1242) 2003-10-08 3:11
An amazing macro. The excellent composition and perfect focusing give this a powerful impact. Another photo that shows the quality of the Zeiss lens.
milloup (1829) 2003-10-08 4:34
Cracking caputure of a helicop... oh, it's a hawker ;-)). No, seriously, this is one of the very best shots of a hawker, that I've ever seen, even in the glitzy, expensive books I get out of the library.
gepall (1836) 2003-10-08 4:41
The colours and the detail are excellent
richspence (71) 2003-10-08 7:47

emax (919) 2003-11-05 12:41
Where you finds all these insects. On the pics they are very interesting, but in this dimensions are horrible.
This enlargement it's well composed and extremely clean. You know to use the macro very good. Amazing masterpiece.
tdoan (95) 2003-11-09 0:30
Beautiful picture. Great DOF and color sharpness. It's amazing how you can get the dragonfly to stay on your fingertip.
RandomCameraGuy (3071) 2003-11-13 12:18
This is by far my favourite of your dragonfly shots. It has a wonderfully alive and in motion feeling to it. The colours are beautiful, and the sharpness is spot on. Excellent shot!
fredrok (97) 2003-11-25 11:43
The colours, quality level, and sharpness in this photo are truly amazing. In order to capture this beauty you have used an awesome angle. Great composition. The only thing that is disturbing is the blurry object in the bottom. But as I can see, kourosh already have solved that in his WS (good work).
Rob, this is a great macro shot, congrats!
Kenny10pin (19301) 2003-11-25 12:25
Excellent macro shot, love the detail, which human eyes could not see alone without the macro, very good timing and cropping
CreaToR (88) 2003-12-23 8:23
everytime i try to shoot a close up the subject moves, or the light ain't good enough... great to see it's possible to shoot a perfectly sharp picture though... gives me hope ;-)
scalerman (26900) 2004-02-10 22:52
Dude, get this thing away from me!!! How big is it anyway 10 feet? Beautiful macro capture. Truly another world exposed for us nearsighted...

jmaddocks (563) 2004-03-15 6:23
Hi Robert. I just came across this shot of yours and felt I must tell you that it is, by far, the best shot of a dragon fly that I have ever seen!Sure, there are parts of the insect that are cut off, but what you have here is so sharp and clear, and it is just incredible. Goodness, I can almost count it's hairs! I love that it is sitting on a persons finger. Absolutely incredible work!
rabani (9645) 2004-03-16 21:39
Huge and pretty detail. What do you have for your camera anyway. Probably a microscope.
Congratulation Rob. You are pretty good at getting up close and detail with your subject.
paroy (318) 2004-03-29 17:09

greghume1 (447) 2004-09-24 22:55
One of the best macros I've seen on TE. Color, texture, DOF are amazing. I'm also surprised that this guy stayed around long enough to take the shot.
vapours (8264) 2004-12-11 19:27
Jeepers! This is amazing, such good detail. I love it!
DuFrank (150) 2005-01-16 15:47
Looks great, Rob! It tends to look more like an illustration than a photograph, because of the point of view, the bright colours on the insect and the blue cloudy sky; it looks so clean. Could do without the blurry spot in front of your hand though....but hey! Who's complaining? It's just a great shot!
archanabhimasen (270) 2005-04-03 23:59

abulafia (4900) 2006-05-07 2:30
Amazing close up of a dragonfly. very detailed and great colours.
Izobretenik (1268) 2006-05-21 19:18
Amazing shot ! The sharpness is great and the colours are really beautiful. The details are sharp and the idea of having this dragonfly with the sky in a blur in the background is really good.
bend1k (934) 2006-05-22 2:50
Robert, is that your finger? how did you get the dragonfly to land on your finger? great shot. the sharpness is excellent

Brendon (289) 2006-11-18 4:15
W O W!!!
Pristine macro; your detail is truly exceptional. Your finger ridges, the small claws, the minute hairs. Holy "bleep", far better then what my eyes would allow for being that close.
Congrats for this shot.
alejandroguzman (4684) 2007-02-13 3:37

Adrique (609) 2008-10-17 2:51
Hi Robert, how did you make the dragonfly to land on your finger? Or how long did you wait for that? Incredible...never happened to me. I guess I did not have luck for photogenic, patient and fearless dragonfly.
Very nice and original macro indeed. The only thing that bothers me is the grey thing in foreground. What´s that?
manatee (4668) 2008-12-30 0:15
