This is the rather splendid but also rather dark and gloomy drawing room in Abbotsford House, the former home of Sir Walter Scott who is probably the best known and most loved of all Scottish writers, having been a historical novelist, playwright and poet, popular throughout much of the world in the 19th century.
This historic house, largely designed by Scott himself, declined into a poor state of repair but it has been taken over by the Abbotsford Trust and has recently reopened to the public after very extensive renovation which you can read about here. These rooms have also been restored completely and decorated in the style and décor which they would have had in Walter Scott's day.
In this picture you can see in the distance the doorway leading through from this drawing room into Scott's extensive library.

You've managed hand-holding your camera, courtesy of that huge ISO, which hasn't apparently degraded the image significantly in terms of noise. This appears as sharp as you like, with good, rich colours and flat areas of single tone: all the aspects I've learned to be concerned about with high ISOs. But then I suppose I'm still thinking of film, with its grain structure...
Your interiors of this place make me realise what I missed by not paying out the entry fee; also what a pretentious git Scott must have been!

Beautiful interior shot of this historic room. Good POV, DOF, clarity, colors and sharpness. Brilliant shot thanks for sharing.

I like very much how balanced and elegant this composition looks as you have employed the elements that define the scenery, the colours and the perspectives in an excellent way. We get a great idea of this nice room and of its details, depth and clarity are superb. Apart from that, even beyond the physical description, the picture is a delight to look at for its beautiful light and well balanced colours.
Very well done.
Wish you a peaceful Advent time.

The atmosphere of warmth created by the subdued lights and the rich interior, colour of the long draperies make these interior picture lovely, cannot be denied. For such an old, spacious house, it looks quite cosy.
Your viewpoint is well considered.
I like the details of furniture and fittings are nicely captured.
Excellent perspective and depth picture.
Nice composition and lovely captured.
Very well done, TFS.

You are masterful with interiors, something I struggle with because of the usually poor lighting, and this is another wonderful example. Depth, color and texture and of course, my Irish eye is drawn to the harp in the corner!
Thanks as always

I am impressed with this shot, because at an ISO of 5000 it should not be as wonderfully smooth and clear as it does here. The room itself is just spellbinding and you have captured its elegance and beauty just superbly. Not taken any interior shots on such a high ISO but I would think my Sony would struggle to capture them as exquisitely as this. Amazing!

le lieux est magnifique et la photo superbe. Les couleurs ne sont pas sans rappeler certaines toiles du peintre Van Eyck comme Les Epoux Arnolfini par exemple. Vraiment très réussi.

Although there are two large windows I imagine this room was, as you describe it, rather dark and gloomy. Considering that, you have captured this relatively sparse light superbly. There are lots of interesting details here among the furniture, paintings and the harp, but it's really the red curtains and green walls that characterize this room. They create a certain cosiness among the gloom.

Beautiful composition with lots of sharp, crisp detail. Even the paintings on the far wall show sufficient detail; also in the other room. I love the red curtains that appear to be mostly lit by sunlight through the window but also the interior lights.
A photo which takes us into the past and is also very pleasing to the eye.

I remember Ann saying that the interiors were quite dark indeed and yet your exposition is fantastic. I don't think I would be able to achieve it with my camera and lenses. Most of all it feels really well balanced without an burnouts from the windows or dark areas inside. It is a wonderful interior but for me it is a great advertisement for EOS 5D MkII. I see you have used the pretty high iso setting and yet there is not much noise in the as if you took this shot with a flash or outside.
You were fortunately here that most of TE members were walking outside so no one has disturbed you to photograph the interior :)

You see, living in a very old house, myself, I really don't find this gloomy, especially with the warmth of the red curtains.
Your high ISO has done a great job at capturing the lovely details, whilst your own, photographic skill has created a fine composition. It's interesting to note the articles that were common in those days: a harp where we would have a tv!
I didn't, at first, notice the open door but it does add a whole new depth to the shot.
Have a great day,

A very good perspective and a well composed picture. Very enjoyable warm colours too. A beautiful room and a very interesting note!

Another wonderful image from the home of Sir Walter Scott. The richness of the colours is lovely and the light coming through the window makes this room look less gloomy that I remember it. Superb quality under challenging conditions.
Best wishes, Ann

this is another wonderful interior of this beautiful house. you have captured the colours perfectly, which is a fantastic achievement if this was handheld, as the image is perfectly sharp. i love the way you have composed this to lead the viewer's eye through the open door into the next room.

I wanted to comment on this photo yesterday but ran out of critiques.
this atmosphere and mood that you captured sets the scene so well, in my opinion the darker light is tremendous.
and how it illuminates the red curtains in the left bg is so sweet.
and i have to say, thats one very unique light fixture attached to the ceiling!!
Oh to have actually been here in the 19th Century, as i'm sure it wasn't so clean and pristine when it was lived in daily. I wish I could have a time machine!
beautiful indoor shot John, well done.

this is a wonderful presentation of the drawing room and its atmosphere. Your photos from Sir Walter Scott's home have a superb consistency. You have offered us the style and atmosphere of this house in a thorough and elegant way. I like very much the depth, perspective and sharpness of this photo, they make us feel like we're actually standing in the room. The softly diffused light and the lovely naturalness, richness and warmth of the colours make the feeling of being there strong and agreeable. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great day,
