Due to the fact that John (Tyro) has organized the TE Meeting in Peebles in the region called Scottish Borders some internationally less known places became suddenly very popular on TrekEarth. One of those places is Abbotsford House. There are already fantastic photos made by Will and Bev and two wonderful interior shots by John (1 and 2) and I thought I will be original preparing this photo yesterday but it seems in the meantime John has posted a very similar shot today already... Still I wanted to have this place in my TE gallery.
The word “Scotland” is not an abbreviation for Scott’s land. It is just a coincidence that this house and grounds, shortly speaking LAND belonged to Mr. SCOTT.
Abbotsford is a historic country house in the Scottish Borders, near Melrose, on the south bank of the River Tweed. It was formerly the residence of historical novelist and poet, Walter Scott (Sir Walter Scott,Bt). It is a Category A Listed Building.
Scotland comes from Scoti, the Latin name for the Gaels. The Late Latin word Scotia ("land of the Gaels") was initially used to refer to Ireland. By the 11th century at the latest, Scotia was being used to refer to (Gaelic-speaking) Scotland north of the river Forth, alongside Albania or Albany, both derived from the Gaelic Alba. The use of the words Scots and Scotland to encompass all of what is now Scotland became common in the Late Middle Ages.

Ciao e buona serata

A beautiful wide view of Abbotsford House, taken from a good angle.
Attractively composed with the lines of the lawn and the paths in the garden on the foreground.
An eye-catcher on this picture surely is the heavy overcast sky.
Best regards, Paul

Świetny kadr, ostrośc jak zyleta i wspaniałe kolory. duzo widzimy na tym zdjęciu, cały dom i ogród. Pochmurne niebo dodaje dramatyzmu. wspaniałe miejsce na spotkanie.
tyro (20778) 2013-11-13 15:45
This is a very fine picture of Abbotsford House and far more striking and artistic than my picture which I posted earlier today. You have used your wide lens (and I suspect at its widest setting) to achieve a wonderfully strong perspective and also to include almost the whole of this magnificent building. The lead-in lines from the pathway are excellent and your composition is very pleasing.
Just as I overdid the colours in my picture of Melrose Abbey, I thnk that the grass here looks just a little too yellow and bright, but it does make a very attractive foreground and also draws the eye well into the depth of the picture to examine the house in its entirety.
And, of course, your picture is technically perfect with spot-on exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
P.S. Just a wee thing - Abbotsford House lies very near indeed to Melrose as you remember. It is not near the tiny town of Roxburgh - that is about 15 miles east of here. The article on Wikipedia is wrong in this respect. What, I think, has caused the confusion is that before all the counties and districts of Scotland were renamed and had their boundaries changed, Melrose lay in the county of Roxburgh (not the town) which was also referred to as Roxburghshire - just as Peebles used to be in the county of Peeblesshire. Now both Melrose and Peebles (and Roxburgh too) are all in Scottish Borders!

Wonderful building and gardens!
Very beautiful, attractive and pleasant-looking picture!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, horizontal format, chosen pov and composition are all excellent photo qualities that I really enjoy!
TFS - congrats,

Nice foreground, splendid building and amazing sky.
The shrub of the left ruined slightly this beautiful image.
dkmurphys (50144) 2013-11-13 22:12
Good morning Mariusz,
What a splendid place in your capture...the iconic image of a Scottish castle. Lovely, great colors too.
Enjoy a good day ahead.
carlo62 (34380) 2013-11-14 0:18
trovo la saturazione un po' eccessiva, ma la foto è fantastica, bellissimo il luogo e bellissima l'inquadratura.
Il cielo drammatico crea un'atmosfera da thriller.
macjake (57362) 2013-11-14 0:59
splendid! just splendid!
I've been enjoying everyone's photos from this well planned TE meeting.
and yes, my jealousy is through the roof!
I'm not sure how you could have perfected this scene any better.
the subject is a 10 out of 10 for sure, and the circular pattersn with the wide angle view really puts it over the top.
Royaldevon (30739) 2013-11-14 1:05
It is amazing how many different photographic views and angles have been produced by a group of like-minded people, in the same place!
I really like how you have included the bush in the f/g to anchor us and give the impression that we are following the curved path, as a prelude to seeing this remarkably beautiful house.
You have done a great job at lighting the scene, for the light wasn't all that good, for most of the time, when we were there.
Have a great day,
lgir (6891) 2013-11-14 1:51
Hello Mariusz ,
beautiful castle and garden, very well made on your composition with excellent color contrasts despite dreary weather.
chrislo (4155) 2013-11-14 4:21
Very good composition. It's a moody shot you have captured with style, lots of atmosphere created with the dark ominous sky. We are able to enjoy all of the features of this great architecture set in a beautiful garden. A most pleasing photograph.
Noel_Byrne (25222) 2013-11-14 5:11
The more I see this place, the closer I get to getting a plane and going to see it, a stunning piece of architectural design. The building looks both solemn and playful at the same time, a nice achievement to be able to do that. Your composition is perfect here, taking in the perfect leading line of the path, and the entirety of the house (its bigger than I thought from the other pics of it here). the stormy sky in the background creates excellent drama and the colors throughout are rich and really attractive. Lovely scene and place, thanks for sharing.
All the best
timecapturer (49288) 2013-11-14 5:39
a superbly chosen POV and wonderfully composed shot of this now famous TE house. The weather has given this a really atmospheric and moody feel and to be honest it suits this beautiful old house perfectly. Execution and presentation immaculate as always. Excellent image!
Sergiom (61906) 2013-11-14 5:43
J'aime beaucoup cette composition. Le château est superbe sous cette lumière surtout avec ce ciel chargé en arrière plan.Le point de vue est parfait et le post traitement particulièrement réussi.
sabermonajati (9589) 2013-11-14 5:57
wonderful view from this building you captured.it is post card.grass in foreground and clouds in background exist nice composition and captured skilful.
annjackman (20091) 2013-11-14 8:20
I am intrigued by the wonderful quality that you have obtained in this picture - your techniques are excellent. It is so sharp and almost 3-dimensional. Clever use of the well groomed path and bushes. The grey sky has plenty of detail and is very well rendered.
Kind Regards, Ann
tatadalou (6421) 2013-11-14 11:39
The contrasting light makes this shot impressive. I'm still wondering if it is an HDR one or not. Excellent sharpness.
holmertz (42235) 2013-11-14 13:38
A very well taken photo, carefully balanced and perfectly exposed. The green "balls" connect the viewer with the building along the circular light brown path which actually looks so neat that I would feel ashamed to leave any foot-prints on it. Maybe i should just walk gently across the lawns, if permitted. The sky is wonderfully dark, but not depressingly dark. There is still enough sun shining through the clouds to give a fine light to the view.
abmdsudi (44238) 2013-11-14 18:33
Impressive, beauty of an old building steeped in history full of character and a classic in its self which sits beautifully within your thoughtful composition with attention to exposure. I bet it could tell a story or two. The lawn makes a lovely lead in to the subject and contrast for the brownish building.that looks a very well kept place being so old. Bit of dark grey is lovely improving the visual impact to complete the picture. Indeed a very pleasing architecture & I am very impressed, Congrats.
SnapRJW (31613) 2013-11-14 23:31
You have included some strong garden landscaping details in your shot Mariusz and I like the way the sweeping driveway draws my eyes to the beautiful house. The wide view certainly shows off the beuty of house and gardens to great effect. Warm regards Rosemary
delpeoples (53415) 2013-11-15 0:16
hehehe after the TE Meeting, Peebles is famous. I think their Tourist Board should have at least paid for your lunch and beers, and also for your photos! Having seen John's image of this beautiful place, I'm getting to know it quite well. It's always interesting to see how different people view and shoot the same subject. I see also that you have done remarkably well with what looks to have been a difficult sky. I think I may have told you this before, but I found the subdued light, grey and white skies so very difficult to cope with. Thanks to your excellent in-camera and post-processing skills, you've created a stunning shot. The colours, the depth and definition are flawless.
Thanks for sharing, have a lovely Friday
Mics (717) 2013-11-15 2:18

excellent this panoramic view of Abbotsford this historic country house with the superb foreground and the brilliant light to enhance the vivid colours and the beauty of this part of the Scottish Borders.
The country house looks to extends in hundreds of m2 having a huge amount for its maintenance.
Have a good weekend,Danos
Gigidusud (16493) 2013-11-15 15:10
Splendid POV on the beautiful castle with the nice garden in FG. I like the contrast colors, the splendid light and the dramatic sky too. Well done!

ikeharel (58847) 2013-11-16 1:51
Good morning mariusz,
Marvelousely built mansion on the grounds belonged to Mr. Scott.
Fine shot show a vast area with great archi.-details, and the meticulousely cared garden in front.
Clouds aloft added a "mini-drama" to the scene, as I remeber Scotland almost cloudy every second day. Also, great clear photo managed. As always. An impressive one.
Have a nice weekend,
willperrett (7420) 2013-11-16 9:17
I didn't think a "straight" mugshot would work so well! It's because you have retain (encouraged?) some interesting colour, especially in the sandy driveway, but particularly in the sky, which is at least as dramatic as I remember it. Good work.
jhm (140585) 2013-11-17 2:58
You found a wonderful castle with a lovely garden in foreground.
Scotland one wonderful country with castles and fantastic ruins of old castles.
Nice depth and perspective picture.
Excellent composition, nice presentation.
Very well done, TFS.
Have a nice Sunday,

Didi (57482) 2013-11-17 15:49
Interesting traditional scotish castle with a nice dramatic sky and clear coloured ambiance
You had a good POV but I think that you should include all the tree on the left corner for making a perspective
mjw364 (7512) 2013-11-18 4:51
Well composed with good balance overall. You have done well to inject some color into this shot since the day was grey and miserable as a I recall. You have also done well to take the image free from people since it was quite busy too! That reveals your patience I think.
adramad (38830) 2013-11-18 5:03
Superb composition with this impressive residence is a wonderful building in the authentic style of the great palaces English.
The various volumes and fireplaces give charm to the whole, a magnificent POV, presenting this sober garden in the foreground, to give a touch of color, the cloudy sky gives a nice touch to the overall dramatic.
A nice color, so natural in these tones.
Also both sharpness, such as lighting are ideal.
Well taken photo. I like
Enjoy a nice day.

You're all getting a great theme with the photos of your meeting! This one is very good, those dark clouds give it an atmosphere of mystery to this beautiful old house. I like the pov and the well managed light. A good quality shot!

a splendid shot with vivid colors, very luminous scenery, perfectly composed
Looks a bit like a HDR but the type that I like without artefacts and excess
Bravo, have a nice WE
Angshu (56050) 2013-12-03 20:18
Fascinating frame & thanks to your touch in processing, the picture looks even more beautiful!
The circular path draws us right into the picture. The dark clouds contrast with the green beautifully!
maloutim (9637) 2013-12-08 0:40
Great picture and instructive note ! I was particularly interested in the history of the word "Scot". I read somewhere that the Romans gave this name to the Gaels of Ireland because it meant "Pirates" in Late Latin.
Your picture of Abbotsford was superbly captured.
Do I guess right if I imagine a few sunrays coming through the threatening clouds ?
Whatever the conditions, the result is perfect with great management of light and colors. Lovely contrast between the yellow path, the green lawn and the rosy, brown stone of the old building.
mcmtanyel (14217) 2013-12-16 21:36
The mansion and the grounds are just spectacular and your photo brings out the best of them. Congratulations and TFS!
josepmarin (57831) 2013-12-19 2:41
this beautiful house of Mr. Scott, its elegant green gardens, the dramatic clouds in the sky, and the good visual angle, make a very aesthetical composition, where you have skilfully managed the exposure and the chromatic quality.
An interesting play of words between the property of the house and the true country.
It's a beautiful work, my friend.
I wish to you and to yours a Merry Christmas.

the detail, sharpness and overall clarity of this picture is stunning. the well saturated colours of the grass and the brickwork are fantastic. your use of the ND filter has also helped produce a wonderful sky with great textures. your positioning of the path in the frame is perfect. a fantastic memory of your trip to this great house with the other TE members.
