The 11th century stone vaulted ceilinged crypt at Winchester Cathedral is home to a solitary life size statue entitled" Sound II" by Antony Gormley. Ground water seeps into the crypt which is lit by the natural light falling through the side windows. The water provides a natural mirror by which to view the detail in the beautifully vaulted ceiling. As there have been heavy rains in England of late the water is up to the knees of the statue. It is a very serene and beautiful sight, well worth a visit. I tried to look for other images on TE of this and the one I found was when the crypt floor was dry.
I didn't have my Canon with me so this was hand held on my little Lumix

A beautiful and emotive shot here, Kathryn - the pose and the water suggests the quiet sadness after a disaster. Nice light filtering into the crypt, and a wonderful still reflection. Beautifully done.

This shot confirms the statement that the photographer is important not the camera. This is one of those shots that really takes the breath away; it is beautifully composed and has an atmosphere of complete serenity.
My good wishes to you for 2013,

che bel riflesso, l'ottimo controllo della luce ti ha permesso di fare un bel colpo.
Bello il gioco di linee creato dagli archi e dai suoi riflessi, la statua al centro crea un'atmosfera mistica.

First, the best wishes for the very happy new year 2013 for you and your loved ones. Very original idea to put the sculpture in crypt with water. Is it also music there? it reminds me impressive visit in Istanbul cistern, with the antique columns in water.
For sure, the place must be worth visiting and photographing.

The silence is indeed quite palpable. A very good rendering of this peaceful scene with the contemplative statue making a splendid focal point.

Hi Kathrin, a well seen and nicely composed shot. It is indeed a very serene image and the archs, vaults and their reflection make perfect framing like the statuts is encased in a capsule. Good exchange for having you feet egt wet :) Thansk for sharing.

Happy new year to you and yours!
You have managed to perfectly capture the atmosphere you describe, thie does feel very [eaceful and calm. I love the many leading lines of the vaulted ceiling pulling the eye in many directions, while the figure stands still and solitary in the middle. Really fine picture, thanks for sharing this new and fascinating place!
All the best

You've got perilously close to my neck of the woods! I know this place well, and love your photograph of the sculpture: it's muted colours are so much more subtle than some of the garish fare we're often offered on this site. Do you know the story of the Victorian diver Wiliam Walker who dived under the cathedral for about 3 years, bolstering the foundations? Without his work, we may not have the building standing still, as it's built, as you know on the marshes of the river. Read here about him if you like!

Hi dear Kathryn
Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. So good to see you back here posting photos.
I saw this on Facebook and am in awe of it. What a wonderful and unique place, thanks so much for sharing it with us. I can imagine how desperately you want to go back there with your big camera, but can I just say that the quality of this photo, the composition, light management and sharpness are all top quality. Except for you telling us (and possible the size of the frame) I would never have known it was anything other than you trusty 5D. A beautiful shot with symmetry to die for.
Big hugs to you and the Fam

A picture with an excellent quality and a
picture where you can feel the Silence.
mjw364 (7004) 2013-01-17 8:56
A very sharp image with a great reflection and composition. In some ways might suggest that this is a metaphor for the image based digital world we now seem to inhabit - a place of narcissistic worship!
photoray (10983) 2013-01-20 16:10
Impressive reflection of the ancient Romanesque arches and highlighted with the beautiful statue. Certainly the water presence makes for the magic.
Nicely composed and created,

I find the picture and your note very interesting and is something that I haven't seen. You captured the mirror effect and the serene simplicity very well.
Kind Regards, Ann

Hi Kathryn. An evocative and somewhat eerie scene.Soft lighting and soft colours give it an otherworldly look. Regards. Klaudio.

Kathryn. A shot that feels tranquil. Well exposed in what I could image to be difficult circumstance down in the crypt.
