Photographer's Note

The Royal Pump Room is one of Harrogate's most iconic buildings.

The building was designed by Isaac Shutt and completed in 1842. Its purpose was to house the sulphur well, a source of water that was considered at the time to have properties that helped heal conditions such as gout and lumbago.

The pump room ceased operation during World War II and was decomissioned after the end of the war. It has now been converted into a museum that tells of the history of the spa waters in Harrogate.
