I have recently moved from Ireland to North East England. This is the fifth country I will live in but even with a lot of experience in moving I am still exhausted. North East England seems to be a wonderful place for a hobby photographer. However both professionally and privately I am entering an extremely busy period in my life so sadly I will be much less active on TrekEarth but I will do my best to stay in touch.
Whitby is a lovely town at the North Yorkshire coast. We have spent there one day and it was not enough to explore all it has to offer. It has a labyrinth of charming small streets on both sides of the river and a promenade along the beach. There are plenty cafes and restaurants. It has a great atmosphere. At the top of a cliff you can visit spectacular ruins of a monastery (in this photo). This angle does not give it a justice but due to the presence of reflection it is the most popular spot for photographers. I will definitely be a frequent guest in this beautiful town.
ABOUT THE MONASTERY
Whitby Abbey is a ruined Benedictine abbey overlooking the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. The first monastery was founded in 657 AD by the Anglo-Saxon era King of Northumbria, Oswy as Streoneshalh (the older name for Whitby). It was disestablished during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under the auspices of Henry VIII. It is a Grade I Listed building in the care of English Heritage and its site museum is housed in Cholmley House.

First of all, good luck and much success in your new home country.
And you already found a wonderful sight there.
It's a very impressive towering ruin of this Benedictine abbey, specially with that surrounding landscape.
Excellent choice of POV between the reed to show us the complete reflection in the water.
Great sharpness and beautiful natural colours.
Best regards, Paul

Fajne ruiny i fantastycznie odbijaja sie w wodzie. Super zdjecie. Powodzenia w nowym miejscu.
worldcitizen (4850) 2012-03-11 16:00
The golden light in this photo is beautiful. I like the way it illuminates the reeds in the foreground. You also got a great reflection of the monastery. Your POV really presents the subject in an elegant way. Good luck in your new home and new country! :-)

You've been moving places recently, it must be really exhausting. Anyway, I liked the composition and the presentation. Very peaceful scene, the reflections are really nice and colors are beautifully exposed. The POV is just perfect. Great work!

First of all, congrats on landing the job....i know you were very worried and stressed for awhile there, so we're all happy for you.

and i know what you're thinking....how would this look in Blue Hour! haha...
go for it, i'm sure you'll do an excellent job.
the photo is pretty much flawless, what can i say?

Welcome back dear Mariusz
You have been missed. I suspected your absence was due to the move, but it certainly looks like you've settled in well. And brought some sunshine with you to the Old Dart! This is stunning, what a way to announce your return. Crisp lines, beautiful colours and reflections and oh that ruined abbey is sensational. An extraordinary photo, congratulations.
It's good to have you back and best of luck in your new country
SnapRJW (18712) 2012-03-11 22:50
Hello Mariusz - Firstly, I wish you well in your new home. My son lives in York and yes, you will have some wonderful photographic opportunities in that beautiful part of England. Secondly, you have already have a great start on your NE gallery. This is a wonderful shot of Whitby Abbey. Quite a different look to many of this well-known ruin. Often the Gothic mood is emphasised but I like your light touch and fabulous POV. The warm tones, reflection and wonderful composition present the abbey in a fresh and attractive way. Excellent work. Warm regards and all the best Rosemary

Hi Mariusz. A great postcard with the good reflection and well condisered composition.
saxo042 (31794) 2012-03-11 23:34
The attractive old ruin is perfectly placed here, with its reflection filling the pond. It is beautifully positioned against the empty horizon. Very good colours and a very interesting note!

Hanssie (9921) 2012-03-11 23:47
This one is just superb, what a fantastic composition you've found, great foreground, all clear and sharp, the whole building in the reflections, ladies and gentlemen : THIS IS PHOTOGRAPHY ! ! !

The most romantic and beautiful picture of Whitby Abbey I have ever seen. This has so much lightness, even the stonework looks light and that reflection just lifts the whole picture onto a different plain. Lovely Mariusz thank you
dta (51378) 2012-03-12 5:23
Hello Mariusz ,
First , good luck for your new life in England .
You've here perfectly chosen the POV , to place the reflection of the ruins in the "V" of the pond . Beautiful light and fine winter colors , for this amazing place .

congratulations on your new job, and new life in the north of england. your first picture from here hints at the wonders to follow. this is an extraordinary old ruin looking, as it does, as if its in the middle of no-where. your framing is superb using the grasses around the water. the reflections are fantastic, and the sharpness of the ruins is stunning. on another day, and with some dramatic skies, i think you will produce many more stunning images from this place.

Excellent composition and a very striking image as a whole. The colour of the dry winter grass complements that of the building and it reflection very well. Best wishes.

MJR (3141) 2012-03-13 16:03
Neat job !
Very soft and gentle image of a view that is so often dark and mysterious.
Love the POV with the reeds and of course the reflection. Despite what you say, I have not seen this POV before; it does not show the building to its best, but it makes a mean shot ! ( you might have moved 60cm left to put the tower in the point of the lake ? Maybe ? or not, as I dare say you checked it out ! )
Will let you know if I have any trips over planned, and we might catch up - there are lots of photo-ops to be had all around you.

holmertz (26906) 2012-03-15 5:45
This is a perfect postcard. The ruins of the abbey are spectacular and they are marvellously reflected in a gap between the two large tufts of dry reeds. A very good photo.

Ola Mariusz ,
ikeharel (37280) 2012-03-17 2:38
A fine perspective over the ruins, with reflection on the water in FG.
I once heared the reason for the roofless monasteries throughout England, is the fact they had a wooden roof when originally built - and a fire destroyed it.
Lot's of luck and success in your new life in the NE beautiful land.
bukitgolfb301 (30063) 2012-03-17 4:13

You probably saw many ruins of abbey in Ireland, but none is as impressive as this one. I love this kind of monuments so I would surely appreciate this one ! You chose a very good POV with the reeds in the foreground adding depth and nice reflections of the ruins. I love too the warm colours and the nice light.
Have a nice week end,
SWEETFREEDOM (18411) 2012-03-17 5:41

siolaw (37568) 2012-03-18 19:28
The ruined abbey in itself gives a fantastic atmosphere and you composed the view perfectly with off centre and wonderful reflections.
Graal (88852) 2012-03-19 0:05
bardzo fajnie skomponowany kadr. Niezwykla ruina i jej odbicie w wodzie. Wszystko tu juz powiedziano. Bdb praca.
josepmarin (55023) 2012-03-19 1:50
you have chosen a very effective framing, with the placing the ruins of the monastery slightly off-centre in order to give power to the neutral space on the left side, by means of the incorporation of the plants in foreground.
The reflections on the water are an important aesthetic element, and give a great quality to the composition.
The management of the light and of the colors is excellent.
A good work, my friend.
My best wishes for you in your so busy period.
Noel_Byrne (7329) 2012-03-19 7:48
I have been yearning for a long time to see whitby Abbey, after seeing so many images online. This is just perfect, the reflection, the colours, that wonderful sky. Looking at this I am close to packing my bags and going now. Thanks for a great shot.

Wspania³e ba¶niowe ruiny strzelistego zamczyska zagubionego w dziczy moczarów.. Piêkne jego odbicie w spokojnej wodzie stawu. Po pogodzie widaæ ,¿e to przedwio¶nie. ¦wietna naturalna kolorystyka i perfekcyjna jako¶æ obrazu.

adramad (27550) 2012-03-20 8:13
Despite being in ruins, the abbey is majestic with its large size and elegant proportions, the composition is delicious, with the wonderful reflection and the golden color of dried aquatic plants.
Perfect light and color. I love it.
Have a nice day.
P/D. I wish you the greatest happiness in your new stage in the northeast of England, I'm sorry you see less around here, but I understand and I am glad that all this is for your sake, you always have a friend here.
Silvio1953 (98093) 2012-03-21 10:45
Ciao Mariusz, great POV on fascinating old ruines, fantastic reflections, lovely composition, wonderful colors, splendid light and beautiful naturalambientation, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio
Waylim (22349) 2012-03-21 14:02
Another great shot, and once again, you are relocating, which is great for us as well as you will present to us different photos of the country. Great composition and technical quality is not need to mention, great as usual.
danyy (0) 2012-03-23 3:07
kiks (11371) 2012-03-30 10:18
Fantastic choice of low pov you did hier making this ruins look enormous. Very beautiful. Personaly i would like to see another light balance that allows to see more definition at the sky. I did WS on it to illustrate it. Hoop you don't mind.
Angshu (51174) 2012-04-04 1:33
So you've finally settled...hope the dust has settled down as well, because I expect you to post many pictures from this area of England & also from this Monastery which is quite unique as a subject even though it has been photographed gazillion times.
This is quite an unique POV as we see the monastery & the reflection though the window of tall reeds. The warm-cold colour combination also works well!
Hope all is well after the transfer. I have transferred 8 times already & know how painful the exercise is
bornav (436) 2012-05-24 4:58
Each photo of your 'postcard series' is as admirable as the other. This one is my favourite, particularly due to the lanscape composition, sharpness and clarity of details!
maria-v1981 (10403) 2012-06-28 7:19
A very pleasant impression of symetry with this superb and incredible play of reflections. Wonderful scene of this place you show us with fantastic management of light, colors, sharpness, clarity. Excellent presentation of this beautiful place and amazing reflection.
ilDottore (5252) 2012-08-20 17:22
Robert1969 (6224) 2013-03-07 5:34
Looks like a scene from a movie: middle in the
nowhere there is a Church (okay a ruin).
I like it very much and I'm waiting for the
knights and horses that will come..
Point of view, the composition and light
management are excellent. The layers in the
picture creates an extra depth. The mirror
in the water is a nice extra, like a cherry
on a delicious cake.
