This winter has (so far) been exceedingly mild in Scotland and quite different from last year when we were struck by heavy snows and frosts even before Christmas.
This was shot in early December, 2010 when the temperature in Lanark was minus 12°C and the recent snowfall had made travel by car very difficult with several major roads blocked. The clear air and bright sunshine, however, made up for it all - far better than the dull, dark, wet and windy days we have been having this year.
Shot in RAW using a polarising filter and converted and edited in PSE6.

I saw him and the family the other day and they are well. Have a great weekend .. Rich

Hello John ,
I hate snow and coldness , so I'm very happy that the weather is so mild this year . Nevertheless n, snowy days provide excellent photographic subjects . A good example , here , with this magic scene , especially for the light on the house and the tree and the contrast with the street in the shade . The composition is excellent and rich , in this well chosen square format .
well done .

Hello John - This is the other face of a snowy winter. The beauty is one aspect. The reality of dealing with snow is another. Snowed in, power outages, slippery roads and pavements, schools closed, gritters. This is an excellent shot. Never mind the difficulties though, you captured the most stunning light when you were slip-sliding in the road. Top class shot. Warm regards Rosemary

oh the winter of 2010, i remember it well. nothing like that so far this year. your picture is superb, just a typical urban scene in the morning, but this one has been turned into a magical winter wonderland. the light is incredible and illuminates the trees and houses beautifully. the sky is fantastic to complete the image.

Hi John, isn't the winter beutiful if it is? Delightful view, the light here is beutiful and all these car under snow. marvelous composition and colours. I remember how i worked to remove the snow form the street. there was no place for it. Nice work on the open air but hard. Well, maybe better without snow??

a wonderful winter scene. It is the light that gives this shot such impact, plus the contrast of white snow and blue sky that is always strangely appealing. A real beauty!
Enjoy a peaceful Sunday - Brian.

This looks like a "real" winter with lots of snow of low temperatures. It looks good in a picture, like here, but I must confess that I prefer a mild winter like the present one. The photo is very good with perfect management of light. The composition with the long diagonal lines of the dirty tracks is also very good.

there is SO much to say about this photo.
Living in Canada, people always think that we have SO much snow - especially Americans who live down south.
when in fact, here on the west coast of Canada, our winter season is rain rain and more rain. We are lucky to get maybe 5 days of snow the entire winter season.
Western canada is much milder than eastern canada, this photo of yours would represent the East and Central, but not the west.
Having been born and raised in Eastern Canada until 16, this brings back alot of memories. Love the snow covered tall trees, the crisp clean air, and the overall atmosphere.

Here in the northeastern U.S. where we get plenty of now there is none as of Jan. 8th.
The warm light following the storm really lights up this charming scene.
Very clear colros and tranquil shadows.
