While we were on errands in central London we had the chance to take the tube to go back home in Kensington high Street. This is an area which I remembered well and which in my opinion is (or was) one of the best residential area in central London. I have been living there, for a holiday in late 1971, when I was a student and had decided to plunge myself in the swinging London, as it was called in those years. I had found a guest house, cheap and very clean, quite near to this station, so it was from here that my daily trips started and it was here that they ended late in the evening. Apart from the names of the shops the station looked the same to me. I took this photo at free hand, having no tripod with me, and I was lucky that it came out quite well. What do you think?
Kensington is a district of west and central London, England within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. An affluent and densely-populated area, its commercial heart is Kensington High Street, and it contains the well-known museum district of South Kensington.
The focus of the area is Kensington High Street, a busy commercial centre with many shops, typically upmarket. The street was declared London's second best shopping street in February 2005 thanks to its range and number of shops. The heritage bus service on route 9, using Routemasters, was extended to Kensington High Street in November 2010 at the Council's urging, partly to boost the number of visitors to the High Street.
Kensington's second activity centre is South Kensington, where a variety of small shops are clustered close to South Kensington tube station. This is also the southern end of Exhibition Road, the thoroughfare that serves the area's museums and educational institutions.
The edges of Kensington are not well-defined; in particular, the southern part of Kensington blurs into Chelsea, which has a similar architectural style. To the west, a transition is made across the West London railway line and Earl's Court Road further south into other districts, whilst to the north, the only obvious dividing line is Holland Park Avenue, to the north of which is the similar district of Notting Hill.
In the north east, the large Royal Park of Kensington Gardens (contiguous with its eastern neighbour, Hyde Park) is an obvious buffer between Kensington and areas to the north east. The other main green area in Kensington is Holland Park, just north of Kensington High Street, whilst Kensington has numerous small residential garden squares.

This is a very sharp image of the station considering it was taken at 1/20th sec. I like the warm yellow colour and the symmetry of the scene. Good work.

Ciao caro Donato,

Complimenti e buon Venerdi',Luciano

Wow! A real eye-catcher. The light is warm and the focus is tack-sharp. There is so much three-dimensional depth to this photo plus a great sense of movement with the pedestrians. It's an inviting scene! Interesting reminiscent notes. Very well done! And thanks so much also for visiting my website. Fine work, warm regards,

La foto è venuta molto bene. Evidentemente la tua mano è ben ferma e la macchina ha un buon shock-absorber.
Bella luce e interessante prospettiva.

A delightful indoor shot in good mix of lighting and your keen eyes have spotted those cheery design. Love how the light is picking out the detail superbly. Excellent compo and pov, the diagonal approach is impressive with excellent, textures, sharpness and color balance. The repeatitive paterns accentuate the depth and perspective. A fairly wide coverage of a busy shopping arcade, well spotted and taken, Congrats

Excellent use of diminishing linear perspective & vanishing point. Well managed interior lighting with the oe in non strategic areas, so no great drama. Like also the diffused light & warm colour tones. Tfs!

The image reminds me that the creator of the miniskirt had her business not far away...!
Awesome sense of depth and the artificial light adds a glowing warmth to the scene...
Well exposed and fine details, and yes - I too remember London from the seventies..!

Ciao caro Donato,

My dear Donato
You have the steady hand of a brain surgeon at 1/20 seconds! The image is razor sharp and I love the warm light that dominates the photo. The symmetry is also very good, showing all the marvellous details of this very elegant train station. I agree with you, Kensington is probably the most affluent and ideal places to live in central London. I'm glad to see that you return to England to visit your daughter so regularly, she is a very lucky girl.
Un abbraccio e ti auguro un bel fine settimana

Handheld?...the effect is excellent with the indoor colours creating a good warm tone. What I like is the skylight through which we can see slices of the sky contrasting with the warm colour tones. Good perspective...nice work!
But I prefer your shots from your native country...full of light & colour, nature & rustic beauty (areas which you show!
UlfE (14641) 2011-10-10 11:18
You obviously have a steady hand and was probably also a bit lucky that people did not move too fast when you took this photo. The sharpness and detail are remarkable taking into account that the exposure was 1/20. The warm colours and the lighting are also very attractive. What impresses me most is as usual you choice of photo subjects. Almost all you photos from London are quite original and not the usual shots taken by visitors to London. Very good indeed. For this reason I am already curious what your next post from London will be. Have nice week!

Hello Donato, you have captured the ambiance of this up market shopping mall so well, the stylish gait of the two ladies in the sparsely populated area works perfectly for me,as does the empty floor space in the fore ground.
A most pleasing photograph of an every day scene.
Best regards Les.

This is a part of my favorite pictures, interior with lot lines, as well as in floor as in the ceiling.
Depth and perspective are pleasant.
Excellent taken with a good composition
Color and sharpness are very pleasant.
Very well done, TFS.

Nice to see that you are still having interesting and beautiful shots in your archives from your last London visit! You have succeeded very well in exposure. A f-stop of 2.8 allowed you to go as slow as 1/20 seconds in freehand shooting. You were there at a moment when the station was not very busy and hence people do not prevent us to see the architecture and details clearly. Yet, the few people give the photo the needed life. Excellent POV and framing with a great perspective impression. Beautiful and pleasant colours. Last but not least, good control of light and perfect clarity. A fine travel photo!
I lived one summer in London too in my student years, it was however 9 years before your first time in London.

Je note un bon contrôle de la netteté du fait que tu n'as pas utilisé un tripode.
J'apprécie les tons chauds de cette galerie commerciale.
Image parfaitement cadrée.
