In the background of this photo is Coniston’s Gondola.
Gondola is a re-built elegant steam yacht providing the most wonderful, nostalgic sailing experience.
The original Gondola was first launched in 1859 and the present-day Gondola reflects and brings to life the splendour and luxury of the Victorian era. 2010 marks 150 years since the first public sailing on Gondola
Not only can passengers enjoy the stunning backdrop provided by the Coniston Fells and its majestic lake, they can relax in the opulently upholstered saloons and marvel at the gentle gliding motion of this vessel which is indeed an experience in itself.
This graceful yacht is part and parcel of the history and heritage of Coniston and plies the lake every year between the months of April to October.
They operate a seven day service running from Coniston Pier to Brantwood and Monk Coniston jetties with round trips of approximately 45 minutes carrying up to 86 passengers on each trip.
Steam power is traditionally produced by the burning of coal, but in 2008 Gondola began burning sustainable logs made from wood waste resulting in a massive reduction of 90 per cent of the carbon emissions produced by Gondola when burning coal.
Gondola’s carbon footprint was further reduced by the fact that previously the only suitable coal for Gondola’s boiler had to be imported from Russia and Poland. The ‘blazer’ logs now being used are manufactured much closer to home in North Wales. Further Information.
The sailing season commences on 1st April. Gondola will call at Monk Coniston Jetty at the far northern tip of Coniston Water every day allowing passengers to combine a cruise on Gondola with a gentle ramble to the famous Victorian beauty spot, Tarn Hows by walking through the the newly opened access through the grounds of the Monk Coniston estate.

An interesting boat, steam driven as I understand!
Probably a nice way of sightseeing, with a touch of the old days...
And somebody forgot the surfboard on the beach, to contrast the two ways of maritime transportation!
s_lush (16600) 2011-03-20 3:17
This picture, so well composed and perfectly taken, shows very interesting vessels in both the foreground and background. Excellent presentation of this highly picturesque place and its transportation system!

A splendid juxtaposition between these two contrasting water crafts. I like also the contrast in colour and brightness between the foreground and background. A well conceived composition nicely presented.

Choice between two means of transport to make the turn of this lake. For me will be the boat !!! Beautiful and pleasant estival sight with correct use of this sailboard which gives depth to the image. The harmony of the colors is also pleasant. Pretty glance, thank you Wilson.
With all my friendships and a very good end of WE,

very intersting picture with this beautiful gondola, and where the vivid colors of the boat sail and its reflection give a nice contrast.Very well seen!

I understand from your note that the Coniston’s Gondola is sort of the main object and by including the the windsurfing bord in the foreground you got a really exciting photo. The board pointing towards the bottom right corner and the bending lines of board and its sails adds dyamics to the scene. The reflections in the water and the shadow of the board are an extra bonus. Very well spotted indeed. TFS and have a nice Sunday evening!

Hi Wilson, So you have gondola in Coniston. It looks different than a Venetian one. Such a trip must be marvelous one. Beautiful landscape around. But the eyecatching here is this vessel in fg with its reflection.
Well done. Have a nice day
siolaw (38292) 2011-03-21 0:55
Good compo with two distinct layers, windsurf board anchoring the shot in the FG and a pleasant view as a backdrop.
I didn't know about English gondolas, these always were Venetian in my mind!
Does it have a slight tilt to the right?
gildasjan (43824) 2011-03-21 8:12
Les couleurs de cette planche à voile donne un bon cachet chaud à l'image de ce paysage.

Hi Wilson! It is the combination of the two ships in a composition that you give here! The colors and the option of adding position! Well done. Have a nice day

The distance between the wind surfboard and the gondola is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details and colors of the gondola. The afternoon light is enhancing the beauty of the colors. Have a nice day.

Thank you very much for your interesting notes.
We get a fantastic image with the sailboat in foreground, together the boat on the river.
You play excellent with light and shadows.
Also the colors and the cloudy sky care for a wonderful image.
Excellent captured and nice composed, TFS.
Have a nice day,

Ciao dear Wilson,
very beautiful and pleasant composition, with the windsurf in the FG that gives color and depth to the photo. Very interesting to see this great gondola, very different in comparison to the classical Venetian gondolas. It's a true pleasure to also read the notes. Excellent work, congratulations!
Ciao, have a nice day!
josepmarin (58359) 2011-03-23 2:00
the yacht-gondola in background is a very interesting element in your composition, with a good information in your note, and seems peculiar to see it in an english lake.
Nevertheless, I believe that the windsurf board in foreground, and the forests in the hills in background, completes a very attractive and elegant composition.
It is a beautiful work, my friend.
jlbrthnn (76039) 2011-03-23 10:47
You describe in a pleasant and interesting way the history and the usage of this old boat. A little bit spectacular foreground introduces pleasant lively colors, and looks of the depth to the photo. An interesting photo with a good quality. Bravo.
Have a nice day

I haven't seen a gondola like this one, interesting composition with the fallen surfing board in the foreground, well done,
Charo (51212) 2011-03-23 17:19
A unique capture this gondola that seems abandoned by her owner.
Very good composition, excellent depth and colors.
Waylim (25436) 2011-03-23 23:31
The photo quality is good not the best, sharpness and clarity can be better, nice color, good light, unfortunatly the sail is down, doen't really make a very compelling photo, if you intended to shot the yatch in the background, could as well step forward and avoid it all together.
danyy (0) 2011-03-23 23:51
mesutilgim (97126) 2011-03-24 16:06
nice capture with good pov.
Wondefull the reflections of the surf on the waters surface.
TFS and best regards

A lovely scene, I like where you've positioned the windsurfer and the reflections are quite lovely. Thanks for sharing and I wish you a beautiful weekend.

an original means of transport, nice p.o.v. with the surf in fg.
Angshu (56760) 2011-03-26 5:42
Nice shot. The composition is very nice especially with the surfboard in the FG, which adds colour, depth & a good element to this picture. Good light & colours for this well done shot!

Hi Wilson, Good ambiance of "being there". The scene shows the variety of pursuits on the waterways. Good realistic colours. TFS. Murray
gunbud (34066) 2011-04-11 18:28
Wonderful atmosphere with the toursit boat moving up the lake that is surrounded by bleautiful green hilss that contrast so nicely with the pale blue sky.
The wind surfing board makes a very nice lead-in to this fine image.
skippy007 (12510) 2011-04-13 16:13
Hello Wilson, Interesting note that compliments this shot, I think it resembles the Venetian Gondola in some ways, of course it's much bigger. Personally I think this is more about the windsurfing rig in FG, the bright colours & reflection immediately caught my eye & I continually return there. An interesting image, capturing well the modern & old, with good depth, colour & contrast.
baddori (20159) 2011-04-21 22:05
Bellissima nota a corredo della foto
Il windsurf in primo piano da un effetto antico-moderno,
La risoluzione è perfetta , e anche rapportata alla linea filante delle linee dell'imbarcazione ...sla navigazione è evidente.
