Good Morning Eveyone,,
The Leeds to Liverpool Canal traverses the area in which I live. It was a massive feat of engineering begun in the 18th century, with the intention of carrying woollen goods and limestone from Yorkshire to the coast.
A short, but interesting history of the canal can be found by clicking here.
Although the canal fell into disuse in the mid 20th century, today, it has a new lease of life, due to its leisure potential.
Now, there are many house boats and narrow boats using the canal. There are many permanent berths and numerous places for temporary berths, supported by eateries and useful shops.
I have often daydreamed about spending my time on one of these boats, where time passes as slowly as the speed, and the changing scenery links to the changing flora and fauna. Mmmm .....
Although the day was cloudy, there was enough light to create pleasing reflections in the water and, I do like clouds!
Many thanks for stopping by.
Please feel free to feedback on any aspect of the photograph. Bev :-)

A very attractive composition with all the elements nicely placed. The curving canal invites us to join the pleasure trippers and explore this beautiful area of the country further. Lovely soft light and natural colours. Excellent sharpness. Have a good Sunday.

Hello Beverley ,
You've perfectly catched the light , under this grey sky , to create a fine composition with three strong touches of colors (green , blue , red) . Great clarity and reflections .

A very fine photograph indeed.
Perfectly composed with the nice red barge sitting at the crossing of the "lines of thirds" in the lower right part of the frame. Lovely colours too. And I love those calm reflections.
You have been fortunate to have a nice interesting sky too - did you have to do anything to that? Often, on days like this, the sky is too bright and featureless.
J_Burke (1285) 2010-06-13 2:37
Very good composition. I like the curve of the canal throught the centre of the image whilst the red barge is perfectly placed on the right.Nice sharpness, well exposed and good colours too. TFS

A success total.

here you have found a perfect light to illuminate a very good compposition. The barge is perfectly placed and at a diagonal that leads the eye along the canal and to those splashes of blue.
BennyV (16867) 2010-06-13 4:21
I like the softness of the colours here, almost like an aquarel painting. Good pov too in this sweeping bend in the canal. And those ominous clouds... Excellent shot, have a good weekend & tfs.

Nice rendering even under these thick clouds that also add volume to the picture, the forward moving curve of the canal is pleasant
Have a nice day JY

Good morning Beverley,
nice the presentation of your home town canal, with the lots of house boats and the permanent berths to almost cover it.I cannot imagine the life on these boats, but the fact of changing places must be a good experience. The light is really good with the reflections on the surface of the water to be superb.Well done.
Have a nice week,Danos

Bev, now you're talking, this is gorgeous. Imagine the sights a leisurely cruise would bring, great work.

This is quite a familiar landscape to me, as my first visit to England in 1958 was to Yorkshire, West Riding (Keighley). Really beautiful here (and probably much cleaner air now than in 1958). Without the boats, particularly the red one, this view would have lacked something. It would still be beautiful but a bit bland. Now this picture is very attractive!

What a tranquil scene we have here with the striking reflections of the old canal boats that beckon us to a different time.
There is noting seen in the surrounding countrside to destory the feelings of olden days.
I think the low clouds work well in this beautiful image.
macondo (19483) 2010-06-17 5:16
A terrific shot against a glary lower sky, with a nice curve in the canal to draw the eye. I recently spent some hours looking again at the canals that have been brought back to life in Manchester; I could easily make canal photography a hobby in its own right. Some of the canal boats are as neat as a pin, others loaded with household junk, bikes, hardware etc, a real mess. Here, the red and blue paintwork make them stand out against the grey/green surrounds. You composed and/or cropped this to perfection.

Ola Beverley ,
Bonitos reflexos conseguidos ao longo deste canal com estes barcos , achei magnifico o céu bem dramático com esta textura de nuvens cinza, bom enquadramento da foto , parabéns!!
um abraço Gonçalo
Bom fim de semana

I think the clouds add a lot to this beautiful scene. Composition is perfect and one can easily imagine sailing down this idealic canal or even strolling along the path for a few hours. TFS

Going from pub to pub by canal boat - that must be a great vacation hehehe!
this is a fine and well balanced composition, where all elements work well together...
Fine colours of spring and the brown boat makes a natural eye-catcher!

It seems to be a very pleasant location!
Your picture is certainly very interesting and pretty attractive!
The composition is a real highlight here with special regards to the reflections on the water surface of that canal! The grey cloudy sky adds contrast and beauty to the image! Well seen and done!
TFS - congratulations!

Wonderful view of the canal and the adjacent fields, beautiful reflections in the water, nice graphics on the trees, cuts in the clouds but fantastic sky. Wonderful light and color.

this is really a very nice POV here that is very much to my liking. Excellently composed and very beautiful impression of this wonderful place by the canal. The light and the colors are creating a dream like atmosphere. My compliments!
batalay (38777) 2010-07-25 7:39
What an inspiring shot of the canal with a rather threatening looking sky lurking in the background. The colors are well captured, without a hint of the silhouette. And as usual, the note is highly informative.
Are you back from your trip to the United States? In June and July we made a pair of dramatic trips — First, to the UK, and then to the Baltic Countries; and second, to South East Asia. I am happy to get back to routine life.
Didi (60588) 2010-08-01 11:57
I like these narrow boats typical British.
I saw some of them in France on the Briare Canal.
Nice curve on the canal in this beautiful landscape.

Hi Bev, I trust that the weather is not too awful for you up north and that it will be kind over bank holiday weekend (forever hopeful).
I love your photo- well balanced and good depth with a touch of the left bank in the image.. reflection almost perfect with just a touch of wind disturbing the surface.. I trust that you will have a great weekend with lots of Photos- keep well Rich

Good afternoon Beverley,
The link to the canal other photos is interesting, giving a fairly good idea how the waterway was effective in old times for transporting goods.
Nowadays, a calm and easy going cruise for tourists, something which I never done, can bring lot's of photography opportunities.
taken about its curve, fabulous sky and clouds mirror on the water, and barges with contrasting colors - all culminating wonderfully.
