Photographer’s Note

continuing with my little series in London, I had noted that every monday, tuesday and friday at noon, a little free concert/rehearsal was being held at the St Martin in the fields church... That friday it was a 4-hand piano rehearsal... Since the church was almost empty, i ventured to get very close the piano in the altar to make some shots...;-) I made a shot of inside the grand piano also

Nice shot Eric. Pardon my ignorance, but is this the home location of The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields orchestra, so often conducted by Sir Neville Mariner? I am not a huge classical buff, but I have probably eight or ten CDs of that ensemble. always very well done stuff. Since it is near Christmas, I guess I should mention that I think they have the definitive recording of The Nutcracker Suite (on Philips, I am all but certain).

The light has given a very pleasing color to this shot. It is too bad the piano is so highly polished, it has led to some hot spots, but there is nothing you would be able to do about that I think. Nice use of limited DOF. A good and different shot.

Quelle douce ironie se dégage de ce plan rapproché... Une pièce à quatre mains, mais une seule sur le clavier au moment où tu as appuyé sur le déclencheur. Normal, en fait, car il aurait fallu un point de vue en plongée pour capturer un plan d'ensemble et je doute qu'on t'ait laisser entrer avec un praticable ou des échasses !

Le plus fascinant, à mon sens, émane des reflets des instrumentistes. L'image rebondit sur la surface alors que le son jaillit de l'intérieur...
Un joli instantané d'intimité... Merci, Eric !

PS Seule (petite) critique : la photo penche un tantinet vers la gauche. Comme quoi, mieux vaut faire un saut au pub APRES, et pas avant d'aller à ce genre de répétition...

Salut Eric et bravo pour cette photo tres intimste. J'aime enormement l'effet de la profondeur de champs. C'est bluffant! Les reflets des eclairages sur le piano sont tres tres bien captes.
Tu dois etre content avec cet objectif et ca me donne envie!

I really like this shot. The DOF is excellent and the composition is very dynamic.

It could be an excellent picture for the jacket of a classical music's CD.

Très sympa cette vue rapprochée, très intimiste effectivement. Il y a beaucoup de bras et de mains pour un pianiste! :^) C'est troublant, surtout avec l'effet des reflets qui augmentent encore le nombre de mains qui se baladent dans cette photo...
J'aime bien les jeux de lumières et de couleurs sur cette photo, et une profondeur de champ bien maitrisée qui nous place au coeur de la musique. Bien vu.

j'aime pas mal ce cliché Eric.. T'as du bol je ne suis pas seulement un fan e l'accordéon.. qui reste malgré tout mon instrument favori...
Le flou au premier plan est très intéressant.... et la masse de noir me plait..
En gros où grosso modo, j'aime...

Very stylish! Great DOF leaving only one hand and about an octave worth of keys in focus. I'm glad your note explained that this was a 4-hander cause otherwise it does look like one man with two right hands!

I'm enjoying seeing your series of photos from London it's like viewing my home city through someone else's eyes.

Eric, c'est très beau.
franchement j'adore, c'est un régal pour les yeux, cette main et ce piano. j'aime particulièrement la lumière qui tombe d'en haut et qui se reflète ici et là. c'est très classieux dans le meilleur sens du terme.

voila aussi une profondeur de champs
parfaite pas devant pas au fond
le point sur la main
une superbe gamme de couleurs
qui donne a cette image une douceur

j'entend presque la melodie du piano

Bien composé, classique et de bon aloi, bref ça va bien avec le thème.

Le commentaire de Rich m'a fait penser à une chose assez drôle, en fait non seulement un seul pianiste aurait eu 2 mains droites mais également un troisième bras si l'on regarde attentivement ;) ...

Bon, je suis toujours extrêmement circonspect vis à vis des qualités du 50/1.8 à pleine ouverture et cette photo n'est pas pour me rassurer : encore des aberrations chromatiques violettes terribles autour des spots blancs et je ne vois aucun endroit qui soit vraiment net de chez net (quand on compare à d'autres photos prises avec un Canon 1.4 par exemple), ce qui n'est pas normal à une vitesse 1/80.

Encore une fois ça n'a rien à voir avec toi, mais ceci confirme le 50mm n'est pas utilisable à pleine ouverture avec un D70, l'optique n'est tout simplement pas calculée pour cet emploi...

j'adore ce genre de photo intimiste.
L'attention du spectateur est dirigée vers les mains du fait de la faible profondeur de champs.
(Cet objectif est une pure merveille soit dit en passant)

Très jolie photo effectivement. Pas facile de "mettre la musique en image", mais ici tu t'en sors très bien je trouve. J'aime beaucoup la texture de l'image, due à la pose assez lente (1/80 s.), et donne un très léger flou propice au rêve et à la flânerie. Très réussi, bravo !

Très belle photo,j'aime beaucoup la composition et la PDC!
Juste un petit bémol si j'ose: un tout petit peu de bruit ( vu la luminosité je suppose que vous avez de monter dans les iso?)
Mais qui doit se corriger facilement en post-traitement!(je poste;-))

I thought this si a beauty, Eric, and worth to write a comment on. I was inactive when you posted it, and I did not wantto come out of my hiding place. I'm trying to catch up now a bit. I like your story, and I think you were very brave.
And I like the way you portrayed his hand like this, but from the picture it's impossible to see that it was a four handed piece.
The person sitting with his hands in his lap, looks more like someone who turns on the pages, although someone like that would surely be on the left of the piano player.
Well done!
