Photographer’s Note

One of my favourite photos - Caroline & Helen relaxing below decks on the Maria Assumpta during the Clipper Challenge in 1982 on the brig Cuidad de Inca (later renamed) from Edinburgh to London. Despite looking a bit crumby, the canvas hammocks were very comfy.

We anchored off Holy Island, but it was blowing a gale and with the pressure of the wind in the rigging we dragged anchors. Unfortunately we couldn't leave as there was a sand bar at the entrance to the bay, so we sat there with then engines on for 6 hours so we wouldn't go aground.

Scanned in from a slide, I've increased saturation, altered shadow & highlights and sharpened.

It's a real pity that this picture hasn't more points. But TE is not a real site about photography... at least good one. :) It's more a social network than anything else. You have to give a lot of points to be noticed... That being said, I really love this picture. Not only the light in the middle of the photo is great, but the sense of intimacy that this scene presents is also a great element of the photo. That smile and the facial expression for the kid in the right, the dialogue, it's a whole plot. A great theatrical play. Very good!

Hi Alastair,

I couldn't agree with Luis more. This is a lovely image that shows us a wonderful candid moment. Images like this succeed for me in that there is no hint of a photographer in it. It is as if we are viewing the scene ourselves. I also agree with Luis about TE but that is another discussion entirely ;)
