Photographer’s Note
Above Park Wood.
Park Wood, near Talgarth, Powys. UK
This afternoon's walk took us up the trail through Park Wood to the ridge beyond, where fine views of the Black Mountains are usually to be had. Today, however, the weather, although pleasant for the walker, was set against the photographer, and a heavy haze obscured all but the faintest outline of the mountains across the valley. Nevertheless, I found this Hawthorn tree upon the ridge which made for a pleasant - if somewhat over exposed in parts, come under exposed in other parts - composition!

i really like the outcome, a good picture start with the composition and you have it in you picture. i also like how the tree turn into black on the white background, give the feeling of a studio picture with background

Indeed, the composition is just remarkable, could be from the French Leutenant's Woman, or a brooding Bronte, something so British, so beautiful, with the rolling hills behind.
Superb shot.

Colin -
Such a beautiful image - when I first looked at the thumbnail it looked like a painting. A very nice landscape composition though the light coming in from the right appears to be just a bit to strong. Mind you, not enough to wreck the image but just enough to comment on. I still like it a lot.
Thanks for sharing

Stuning shot Colin! I think the positioning of the tree is just perfect, with the long branch hanging out over the valley. The valley has a slight haze covering the farms, and the effect of this is wonderful. It makes the tree stand out even sharper, and it makes the valley a bit mystical, or idealized. Superb!

Great photo, Colin, with the looks of a fine classic painting. Well framed with the mighty old tree as a compositional anchor and also as a foreground device that opens up the view towards the beautiful wide countryside. Nice ambience with the light as it accentuates the details of the gently undulating hills.

Hi Colin,
A landscape in Harry Potter. I like very much the treatment of this photo which gives it a feeric and mysterious atmosphere. The lights and the colors are extraordinary and very beautiful. Framing with this secular tree is excellent. Cheer.

This is very Tolkienesque. A scene of real bucolic beauty. The tree really makes this work for me. It seems like the perfect spot for a walker to take a rest, sleep under the eaves for awhile and recapture his energy. A really atmospheric shot - thanks for sharing it with us.
P.S. I really like your profile photo too.

Hi, Colin,
I don't know if I told you this, but I meant to... You do some of the most awesome shots of my country I have yet seen. Places I have dreamed of going and never have. And through those wonderful shots of yours, I am able to (virtually) visit. And still... It is your shots from Wales that just WOW me. It is SUCH a beautiful country and we see far too few shots from there (imho) and when they are as good as yours?? Please. Bring us more. What a magical place. Many thanks and kindest wishes,
Shelly

Colin,
I rarely open shots that I see in the main gallery of TE, but this attracted me right away as a thumbnail. The light in the foreground and especially on the lower portion of tree is simply magical. Speaking of the tree, it is superbly placed in the left corner and having the branch in the upper portion framing the whole scene. The background is presented in a translucent pastel atmosphere and evokes awe. The only thing that doesn't attract me so much is the more than obvious use of the ND grad filter that darkened the branch, leaves way too much.
