Photographer’s Note

Hello everyone! Just back from Scotland ... a somewhat rainy stay (but well, it is to be expected, right?) But great nonetheless. Let's start right away with a classic, I'd say even an top-classic but classics have their good sides too ... Eilean Donan deserves its title of 'most photographed castle in Scotland'. It must be said that the site is really wonderful. The castle is located on an island at the junction of three lochs and surrounded by beautiful mountains. Built in mid 13th century and rebuilt over the centuries, it reflects the feudal history of Scotland.

We had hardly arrived when it started to rain and it made shooting more difficult. I managed, however, -in between furious wipes of the filters- to get some. Here is a first converted into B & W, others will follow ... We made a fairly quick stop but I think one should stay several days as this castle is so photogenic ... the views are many and varied, add to this blue hours, sunsets, mist, etc ... ... and there are ways to fill up memory cards !!!... but I'm getting carried away, it would require a who-wants-to-be-a-millionaire type of budget to do all that!

Bonjour Philippe,

Ce traitement en noir et blanc est une très bonne idée. Cela permet de mettre en valeur à la fois le château et ce ciel tourmenté.
De plus, le drapeau écossais sur le pont est bien déployé.

Ainsi la météo n'a pas été avec toi, mais en Octobre c'était à peu près certain. Ta conversion en b&w a l'avantage de t'affranchir de ces mauvaises conditions et de nous livrer une image au caractère dramatique parfaitement adapté à la scène

This B/W version gives a dark atmùosphere to the castle, enhanced by the texture of the clouds that seem to converge around the castle. Good work.

A real Scotland landscape, composition is well framed, but what I like from this picture is the well use of the black and white to give a more dramatic atmosphere.

Bonjour Philippe,
Pour ma part j'ai eu la chance de voir ce château sous un grand ciel bleu ! J'y étais pendant l'été 2003 alors que la canicule assommait la France ;) Malgré les conditions météo difficiles tu t'en es très bien tiré. Le choix du noir et blanc permet de s'affranchir en partie de cette météo et de donner de l'intérêt au ciel nuageux. J'aime bien le cadrage et l'excellente netteté.

Bonjour Philippe,

Tu nous presentes un beau travail de conversion en N&B. Cette photo devrait offrir un bon rendu sur un tirage papier.
J apprecie particulierement que le chateau dans une palette sombre se detache bien sur une zone de nuages plus claire. Ca fonctionne bien.

L'ambiance que tu as su créer avec ta conversion en N&B est juste géniale !
En me plongeant dans ton image, je pense Hitchkock. Je pense Psychose. Je pense musique angoissante !
Super traitement et une composition équilibrée.

yeah...and i see new equipment with which you've experimented this time...love to see see the entire bunch of photos..you were fully loaded..geared and wired up !!

the filter has given more definition than usual..would have preferred to see more of the mountains..using the whole 18mm instead of the 21..would have been stronger in terms of elements..and composition..

overall a good one to start with..

une belle version de ce célèbre et photogénique château écossais. le noir et blanc sied particulièrement bien au lieu et renforce l'ambiance créée par ce ciel très chargé et menaçant.

Je vois comment on contourne les conditions climatiques difficiles... ;-)
Le résultat est fort bon ! Un très beau N&B avec une atmosphère bien écossaise, emplie de mystère et qui donne la chair de poule !
Je ne sais pas si on va voir toutes tes photos d'Ecosse en N&B mais si elles sont toutes aussi bonnes que celle-là, alors c'est plaisir garanti !
Composition et cadrage impeccables. J'aime beaucoup la partie la plus foncée du ciel. Pour moi, c'est cet élément qui fait la différence.

I have to say that the choice to shoot this as black and white was an excellent idea.
The low cloud coverage makes for an errie ghostly type of mood.
Its great that you were able to produce different shades of grey in the sky.

Même si j'ai un penchant très net pour la Méditerranée, j'avoue que l'Ecosse est une destination qui me tente vraiment. L'ennui, c'est que je ne me vois pas du tout conduire à gauche, ça a l'air con mais je crois que c'est la raison principale pour laquelle je n'y suis jamais allée!!!
Bon, quand je vois ça, je me dis qu'il faut que je sois + aventurière. Même sans lumière directe du soleil, tu réussis à renvoyer un fantastique éclairage digne d'un décor de théâtre sans doute avec ce choix d'une longue pose. En tout cas tu as cherché et parfaitement réussi à nous mettre dans l'ambiance!
Après tout, vu ce que tu dis, je pourrais peut-être m'y balader à pied. Juste pour faire le tour d'un loch, au grée des lumières...
J'attends la suite avec impatience!

I've always thought that classic is classic for a reason :) something that is not inspiring or just plain boring practically never becomes "classic".
love this photo, the B&W version has that timeless quality that fits very well with the old castle. good work in maintaining the texture of the clouds, the result looks really good.

Hi Philippe,

The Lynyrd Skynyrd, or rather J.J. Cale, reference of your most recent post got me clicking, but this is where I ended. A classic shot from Scotland, but very well done. Lovely moody dark and gloomy bad weather treatment in black and white. Great how the flag stands out. Were you waiting for the right breeze?

I'm jealous you've been able to photograph this famous castle. wonderful mood captured, seems it could host a horror movie of some kind.
i really like the addition of the scottish flag on the right.
