[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Encore une petite vue de ce magnifique Waterstein Head, un peu plus en détails...
En s'approchant des falaises (pas trop parce que le sol a une fâcheuse tendance à l'instabilité !) et avec des jumelles, l'amateur de piafs se régale... Plusieurs espèces marines nichent dans ces falaises; nous y avons notamment observé des fulmars boréals (ou boréaux on peut dire les deux comme dirait Panoramix à/en Alexandrie ! ;), des mouettes tridactyles et des guillemots de Troïl. Dans l'eau, présence de pingouins torda.
Deux trois mots pour expliquer leur présence ici, car c'était en partie mon sujet de mémoire de maîtrise et c'est pas tous les jours que j'arrive à la recaser !

Les oiseaux marins ont des exigences particulières en terme de nidification, dépendant de nombreux facteurs. Le climat est un facteur essentiel dans le sens où il induit les autres, ainsi que la géomorphologie (forme de l'érosion créant des corniches par exemple). Les autres facteurs sont l'exposition au vent et aux intempéries (nidification préférentielle sous le vent pour pas mal d'espèces), la végétation, les caractéristiques de la mer (température et courants influents sur la ressource alimentaire, saturation des pêcheries par les colonies ou par les hommes) et la sensibilité des espèces aux dérangements (humains ou prédateurs). Ce dernier facteur est particulièrement prégnant dans nos régions où l'abondance des goélands créé un déséquilibre écologique important (ils représentent près de 75% de l'ensemble des espèces marines nicheuses en Bretagne). Les goélands occupent donc des sites auparavant occupés par d'autres en les chassant, dégradant les sites, voire en pillant les nids (les racailles...). Enfin, le réchauffement climatique, en faisant varier plusieurs facteurs fait migrer certaines espèces (c'est notamment le cas du macareux moine des Sept-Iles en Bretagne nord qui boude nos côtes tropicales !!!). On peut fermer la boucle en précisant que l'installation des colonies d'oiseaux a un fort impact sur l'environnement : dégradation des sites et destruction de la végétation par piétinement, arrachage, enrichissement du sol par le guano (et prolifération d'espèces végétales indésirables), donc lessivage et érosion des sols à nu, surpêche etc etc... Ce qui influe sur l'installation de nids... en boucle...

One more view of Waterstein Head with more details.
With binoculars you can observe marine birds, nesting there; we saw Northern Fulmars, Common Guillemots, Black -legged Kittiwake, and Razorbills in the water.
Marine birds have particular demands for nesting, depending on a lot of considerations. Climate is one of the main as it affects other parameters such as wind (the birds prefer to nest downwind), vegetation, sea characteristics (temperature and streams affecting the food resources), the specie's sensibility to disturbance (from humans or others animal species). Geomorphology is also very important as the kind of erosion provides ledges for example. Climate change is also a consideration as it has an influence onto the others parameters. To close de loop, it's important to precise that nesting colonies affect the environment : destruction of vegetation (lifting, stalling and proliferation of undesirable vegetation because of the guano), acceleration of erosion because there is no more vegetation on the soil, proliferation of the gulls etc etc... What is impactul on nesting... loop...

Hello Marion,

You have chosen a great viewpoint from which to capture these rugged cliff and spirraling sea birds.
Good composition, and the receding cliffs create a nice perspective.
The sky is cloudy and overcast so I am pleased that you have not been tempted to over brighten the scene.
Take care not to over-sharpen as that creates a white halo around the edges of your images.

Very nice formation of rocks, the sharpnes of the photo is a bit overdone but makes the details of the rocks more intense. your note is very good as well.

A very impressive and dramatic landscape shot, with the special treat of looking down on the swooping birds. The rock cliff faces are amazing, and it seems the birds have spent a lot of time there, judging from the white stuff all over the ledges! Your vertical format presentation really conveys the grandeur and size of these cliffs. A very good shot.

Belle photo et belle note! La photo est très bien composé avec ta vue quasi plongeante sur ces falaises, un bon équilibre entre paysage terrestre, marin et ciel. Les oiseaux en vol apporte un plus à la photo et symbolise bien ce lieu. Les WS sont également très bon et complète bien ton post.

Decidément, on ne vient pas pour rien sur tes images; non seuleument on voit des coins superbes mais en plus la note l'accompagnant te permet d'attaquer une nuit de sommeil beuacoup moins ignorant que le matin même !! c'est tout l'esprtit TE

Pour compléter ta note bien intéressante, c'est vrai que les goélands en Bretagne on connaît, c'est pas toujours sympas... et ça fait de grosses fientes qui tombent souvent sur le toit des voitures, on dirait qu'ils visent !!! Après cet intermède, félicitations pour cette belle série de photos sur ce site naturel, ces falaises sont vraiment vertigineuses et on reconnaît bien les nids aux coulées... Une vrai petit paradis pour passionnés d'ornithologie en tout genre. Beau travail, merci Marion.

a very nice shot with these huge and steep cliffs. The light is soft and still gives enough contrast to work out the texture of the rock and allow to see how the birds build their nests into the wall.
Why not stepping a little bit to the right and moving the camera slightly to the left to get the cliffs plunging into the sea at the background of your image?

Au départ on ouvre pour les falaises et ce merveilleux paysage sauvage, puis on découvre ces sympathiques habitants et ta note passionnante, puis ces guillemots de Troïl si "distingués" dans leur redingote!
