Photographer’s Note

There's been a royal palace here since at least the 13th Century, but the current building was begun by King James I of Scotland in 1424. Its main claim to fame though, is as the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1542. Linlithgow's last royal resident was Prince Charles Edward Stuart, possibly better known outside Scotland as 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', in 1745. Shortly afterwards, the Palace was take by English troops, who were unfortunately less careful than its previous owners. Following a fire in 1746, the Palace was left roofless, in which state it has remained to this day.
