In late spring I had a trip with my local camera club to a private falconry centre not far from home. It was a great fun day out but trying to capture pictures of these birds in flight was very difficult to say the least. I did, however, previously post this picture of an Eagle Owl in flight but it was less than perfect.
This is a picture, taken the same day, of that very same Eagle Owl but this time it was sitting still on a fence post and so it was very much easier to photograph!
The Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo) is a species of eagle owl resident in much of Eurasia. It is sometimes called the European Eagle-Owl and is, in Europe where it is the only member of its genus besides the Snowy Owl (B. scandiacus), occasionally abbreviated to just Eagle-Owl. Its great size, bulky, barrel-shaped build, ear tufts and orange eyes make this a distinctive species.
A beautiful bird and one which was very well cared for by its owner!

What a beautiful bird! The eyes are so piercing and alert. The feathers, so sharp and of many colours of brown. You have portrayed it so well,so as not to show the jessies.

amazing shot this. So much clarity and exquisite detail. This benefits from the larger file uploads. I thought the maximum was 500KB but this is over that so assume I have once again missed an update through not being able to access the blasted forums. Needless to say this is a superbly accomplished execution and stunning presentation. Mesmerising eyes!
Have a great weekend - Brian.
Losing patience with the fact that the mods do not seem to want to address the problems around the forum virus threat, or am I the only one who has my virus software advise me that it is a danger area on the site? I only noticed the other day that another couple of my favourites had stopped posting because of images being deleted..........................B

perfect bird portrait, with the amazing feathers and the living eyes. Apparently, one of his "ears" has moved during the catch of the picture.
holmertz (31340) 2013-10-19 6:24
This is a brilliant "portrait" of a technical perfection that I could never achieve with my inferior digital cameras or scans. The sharpness captures the softness of its feathers so well that I feel an urge to touch it. However, that would probably not be a very good idea, I'm afraid.

I remember reading a few years ago that when the first Harry potter film was released, people rushed out to buy snowy owls as pets, and there was a huge upturn in the number of people being pecked by them, no surprise. When I see a shot like this, I can see why, it is a very beautiful creature, but its eyes do bely its true purpose, hunting! The clarity you have managed on this bird is just amazing, and I feel I can almost see into his soul through those eyes. The colors through the feathers are incredible, and those ear tufts are really cute. This picture is superb!
Once again, thank you!
All the best

I remember that I already liked your owl in flight shot a lot, but this close up is simply gorgeous. The owl is so pin sharp that we can easily make out the details of her feathers. This is a beautiful bird indeed.
have a great weekend

what can I say here John? you certainly got the eyes in focus, and thats what matters most here.
beautiful isn't it!
the owl even LOOKS intelligent. looks focused and 'aware'
I'm just glad I don't have eyebrows like that! haha

It is very easy to understand why owls are associated with wisdom in all fables! The eyes of this bird give a very clear impression of intelligence. This is a very good portrait with superb sharpness!

I tried the photo hunt and I know how hard it is, it is not my favorite genre, and I think even your own, you've got the beautiful details here the focus is perfect and the eyes are magnetic and ruthless, a really good shot...perfect exposure with a perfect bokeh...

Ciao John, great portrait of fantastic owl with amazing eyes, superb sharpness, fine details and splendid light and wonderul natural colors, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio
Romano46 (11573) 2013-10-22 4:48
Ciao e buona giornata
rogerl (1156) 2013-10-22 14:24
John, this is a beautifully sharp portrait, captured when the owl was apparently looking directly at you, perhaps wondering if you were small enough to eat. Lovely colors, particularly in the eyes. Thanks.
delpeoples (48660) 2013-10-26 21:59
Oooh he's adorable! And I can't make up my mind if he looks more eagle, ewok, or tiger. His fluffy ears are so cute and the catchlights in his eyes make the photo. Stunning depth of field and definition. It honestly looks like you've asked him to pose for you and he's said, "okay, just hurry up, then I've gotta go". Excellent wildlife shot.
Have a happy Sunday

Absolutely stunning! The very sharp eyes are piercing. The feather detail and colours are excellent. DOF and framing perfect - 10/10 from me!
