Photographer’s Note

Another view from the steps of my house as the winter sun rose over Shetland.

The headland to the left of the image is the southern tip of the island of Bressay. It guards the entrance to the main harbour town of Lerwick.

The land in the middle of the frame is the southern tip (or 'Ness') of Lerwick. A small pennisular that has somehow evaded the builders, despite being completely surrounded by development.

The photo is pretty much unprocessed other than the use of levels and curves.

Nothing added - nothing taken away...

Soft as you like with an excellent choice to concentrate on the sky. Colours are subtle with good highlights in the sun. Well captured

Nice sunset captured here with delicate tones and soft clouds, I would maybe like to see a bit more of the middle piece of land (it looks a bit cut off) just to balance the composition, otherwise it is a beauty,

Hi Craig,
Very beautiful image, I particularly like the emotional balance between the cooler blue sky at the top and the warmer lower section. The title is also very apt, there seems to be something quite primordially northern about this scene. Good decision to include just a thin strip of sea and land as the sky is the real star here, subtle yet dramatic.
Lucky you to be able to get shots like this from the steps of your house!

Hello Craig,

Very nice colors in the sky ! Clouds and sea seems to be "smooth", so I thought you had a long exposition time, but it is only 1/200 s.
I also like the composition, with the horizon and cliff on the bottom of the picture.
